View Full Version : Should I run this tire?

I was going over my car for a final inspection and found a screw in my tire that was most likely picked up at the dyno shop. It went straight in the tire but did not go all the way through. The tire is not leaking at all and still holding constant pressure.

What do ya'll think?

I would run it but then again the tire looks to be at the end of it's life.

Question about tires.....
I have read where some say the tire is the fastest when they are slick like yours then I have read new tires are up to two seconds faster? I certainly don't know but would like to.

Jerry,
It depends on the number of heat cycles on the tire. If you have more than 3 weekends on a set of tires, you'd probably pick up some time with new tires, even at 4-5/32's shaved. I run the tires until they cord, or have more than 5 weekends, but I'm allocating my "new tire" budget elsewhere.

Some only put 2 weekends on a set of tires and start at 3/32's.

Also, I've heard that the more "slick" they get, the more you can possibly run into the carcass of the tire and that is made from harder rubber than what you want to be racing on.

Maybe Richard P can chime in with some good tire tech.

Jerry,
This current set of tires has 3 weekends on them, I am wanting 1 more out of them.
My first set of tires were full-treads and they lasted 6 events. The first 5 events felt good and then the 6th event they felt horrible. That was 1 1/2 years ago so I'm sure my tastes have changed.

FWIW, I get my tires at 4/32's and like to get 4 events from them.

I would probably run it. It seems the most likey thing that might happen is a hole happens and it leaks out. I wouldn't think it was cause any serious tire failure.

I have had to pull many rocks out of the tread over the last year.

I averaged 3-1/2 weekends out 4/32nd tires.

I have to do something about tires. I bought two from Phill's last week. Yesterday I had them installed and I found the packing slip. He charged me $80.38 for shipping two tires to Hutto! $195.00 for each tire then $20.00 each to shave them. My bill was over $500.00 for two tires!!! I bought two tires from him at the end of last year but I did not look at the ticket to see what the shipping was and the wife paid the bill and did not say anything. I'm going to call him tomorrow about the shipping charges. I used to get VIR scuffs from Elkart Lake, Wi. and the shipping for tires twice the size of the RA1's was about $15.00 a tire. I hope it was a mistake. I like dealing with Phill but not at those prices. Jeff? The price to ship tires to Dallas or Hutto should only be a few bucks different.

I wished like heck you were doing that before I ordered tires from Phil.

I haven't gotten them yet, but I did get the bill.... 4 delivered to by door for $1,018.

I think he raped me on shipping too.

IIRC, shipping for 4 tires from Vilven was around $55-60.

I emailed him and he claims $80.38 is correct for two tires from NY to Central Texas. I'm done with him! I told him I wanted to put them on my UPS/FedX/DHL account number when I ordered but he did not want to. No wonder. We need a local source.......thanks Robert for stepping up!

Might explain his new Hoosier contingency posted on the AI national forums....read the requirements and you begin to think he's smokin' someone's ass pipe!!

I will stick with my boys at vilven unless they can't get tires. Robert, I realize that was for CMC tires but were they shaved at that price?

PM me price for 275/40/17's if you get a chance...

Thanks!

Throw the price up here Boudy (or Michael). Also put the R888's in the mix in the standard AI size, please.

Jeff,

I'm very sorry but we did the best we could for the guys. I suggested to Jerry that he go the shippers website and enter the info and he will see that we didn't overcharge. Even then there will be fees that won't appear until you actually ship the package. Every courier now charges by "dimensional rates", which has raised the cost incredibly. There are "exceptional handling" charges that apply to all tires. 255/50R16's are too big to bundle together, so they have to be sent as separate packages. Then they incur a box charge whether the tires are in a box or not. If the shipping location is rural rather than urban, it is more expensive. Residential is more than business, even if you have a business and it run out of a residential location. We can't afford to lose money on shipping and we are certainly not making any money off it. We are very often eating other charges that show up on our shipping invoice after the packages have been shipped. The shipping companies have just recently, last month, raised rates by 3.9%. The gas increases have added surcharges to every package. The shipping companies are making all the money, we are at their mercy.

I'm really very sorry,
If you or anyone wants to call us, we will gladly discuss it further.

Phil

Not your fault Jeff! If others are getting four tires for $60.00 shipped from Vilven then it should not be $80.00 for my two. I would rather buy from Boudy anyway.

I order them shaved. We looked into a shaving machine but with the release or the R888, I believe that shaving will be a thing of the past. We have always been up front about saying that we order our tires from Vilven with their excellent shave job. I had tried to put together a large order before the season but Vilven could not garentee that it could be filled before the first event. When I can I will put together a large order that can be truck freight and then offer them to the users of this board without shipping charges. So give us a heads up and we can organize a good deal!

rumors are that the 275/40/17 R888 will be the ONLY size that will require shaving due to the added tread molded on to it. So, leave it to AI to have higher costs! :x

I find it hard to believe that only one size will require shaving.

supposedly so we can run it as a rain tire...makes sense! However, if you go to toyo's site, they list ALL the R888's at 6/32 tread depth. wonder where the guys on the national page are getting this rumor?

either way, if you were to shave to 4/32, they would probably last longer and given the fact they have less void area, you would make them MUCH lighter!

but, I guess until they put one on our shores, we will never know!

6/32?
That's a rain tire right there.
No way shaving won't continue.

Even at 6/32, do you really see a need to shave 2/32 off these?
