Ok guys. #rd gen camaros came with a 350 tpi motor (L98) can we run these motors or are we stuck with the 305 (Lb9) I'm really confused on this and need some hard answers cause I have an L98 available to me ready to go? Anyone??????

3rd gen's can only use the 305 - no 350's permitted in a 3rd gen chassis in CMC.

Looks like everybody else is asleep...

Nope, nyet, don't even think about it... 305's only for the 3rd gen Fbodys.

You could run a carb on it though...

General Motors (Early GM)
Eligible Early GM makes and models:
1982-92 Chevrolet Camaro (all submodels with 5.0L V8 motors eg – RS, Z28 etc)
1982-92 Pontiac Firebird (all submodels with 5.0L V8 motors eg Formula, Trans-Am, WS6 etc)

8.15. GM Spec Engine Option
All of the following unmodified aftermarket components (and only these components) may be installed on an OEM stock unmodified GM/Chevrolet 5.0 liter (305ci) V8 long block to create a carbed, spec CMC GM engine:
1. Holley carburetor 600cfm-4bbl #4776
2. Edelbrock Performer intake manifold #2101 or #2104
3. Edelbrock Performer Cam kit #2102
4. GM OEM H.E.I. distributor (non-computer controlled)

You cannot run a 350 cid motor in a 3rd gen, irrespective of the choice of induction. That said, the l98 is an obvious option for getting 3rd gens to CMC2 power levels some time down the road. So, if that motor is a good deal, you might want to snatch it anyway and keep it for future use.

ok cause in section 8.13.1 it says " Any available engine that was offered in the generation range" basically. I was doing research and found that the L98 was offered in the 92 IROC so that's why I was curious. Well it looks like I have some motor building to do :)

I have actually seen a couple in 92 RS models as well. I still can't confirm it or not but I had a customer that had a 350 TPI in a 92 RS convertible with a 5spd. This was in 95' so I don't know if he put it in there or not...I have been told there was NEVER a 3rd gen built from GM with a 5.7 and a 5spd...

IT would make for a fun AI car though!

Yeah it would. It's a shame the 3rd gens aren't eligible. That was one reason I almost didn't get a 3rd gen. But I couldn't pass it up for the price.

Ok so here's another one, how many third gen guys are running aftermarket (a.k.a. better) radiators?

so after this weekend, I was thinking, you didn't let any of us take your girl for a ride! What's up with that?

I have a big Griffin. (in when I took ownership)
It's WAAAAY over kill.
Plus it's heavy due to capacity.
Look at the HP numbers of the ones out there and remember the class numbers.
If you take the time to ensure all the air in the front, goes through the radiator and not around, a stocker may suffice.

I've also been told a stocker can work if ducted correctly, I have not tried it however.

I am using a really nice Ron Davis that fits a 3rd gen opening almost perfect. I also have a generic Summit 3" aluminum that has not been used for sale if you want to use that route.

- no, the other one

I have big ass radiator and like JB said it is overkill only run cooling fan when sitting. Also, I ran a 305 w/carb in CMC spec and got 292/311. The motor was strong and endured a couple of 15 session race weekends with Amber in HPDE and me in AI. Don't discount the motor, it will make the specs. rasily for CMC. My main problem with the motor is the FACT that it is a discontinued motor for GM and they sub the 350... Spec motors are confined to what is AVAILABLE through the manufacturer.. Correct???

Guess my point is if I blow a motor I can't go to the dealer and get a replacement, but 302's are sitting on the floor at any Ford dealer.

that's a really good point! i still think we should be able to run 350's since they were available in our Generation range...but that's just me.

So if i grab that summit from Wirtz and duct the radiator and run two electric fans I think I'm gonna be ok. Man it is really hard not to mod the crap out of this motor! It's against my nature! LOL So the horse power numbers that are on the CMC chart are rear wheel numbers correct? (I know that's porbably a stupid question) just paranoid

Come on Ross.
How many time has someone said that over at cmc.com?
Hundreds I bet.
Hold on to the L98. Someone here in Tx will need it to be the guinea pig for cmc2 with a 3rd gen.

Think of the possibility of not running any fans. I haven't run one for over a year and Glenn doesn't run one. I think there may be others but am not sure. It allows for weight off the front, less wiring, more space, etc.

Not sure if there would be any issues with your 3rd gen but I would definitely look into it.

OK 3rd gen guys!!! Found a complete TPI setup including distributor, wiring harness, computer and the intake snorkel for $350 bucks shipped! Yes or no?

What year?
LB9?
Need the 773 cam from 91-92.
Are the injectors any good.
Knock sensor new is $80.
Got ECM?
Regardless if it's rebuildable probably about right.

from a 92' Z28 is what I've been told. Coming off a car that was running recently. seems like alot of stuff for that price.

Does compression ratio have to be at exactly 9.3/1 or is there a range? and where can I get that 773 cam? Do they make reproductions? Junkyard?

jeffburch
02-18-2008, 02:33 PM
If it's a 92 TPI LB9 it should have that cam.
Look at thirdgen.org for year specific info.
If you have one, there is a place in Dallas who will make a duplicate for under $200.
Also, my electric fan is a oem single.
It doesn't weigh anything. I couldn't live without it.
Do a search here on compression for the tolerance.
Big thread either here or cmc.com. Be very carefull with both the cam and CR. It will be checked, I know 1st hand.

There is a range, but essentially its intended to cover expected variance and the legal changes resulting from multiple rebuilds that impact compression. Dont do anything silly, you dont need to to get good numbers.

I know some guys dont run fans at all, but I still like having a small/medium electric puller. I've seen lots of cars puke after coming in and tooling around the paddock a bit.

Same here.... I like the insurance even if it does cost me a few pounds.
