How do you download a video from a Sony Digital 8 Camcorder to a computer and then convert to a small enough file to be downloaded? :?:

I use the Dazzle DVC 80, they run from 15-60 bucks on ebay.

For conversion I usually go to an AVI format for streaming media which really cuts down the file size, of course quality suffers a great deal. I think Mitch is the resident guru on this topic?

Kevin,

Your Sony should have a mini firewire or 'i-Link' port on the side where the RCA cables plug in. If you do have this port you will have to buy a mini-firewire to firewire cable($20-30). You can use that if your computer has a firewire input on it. If your computer does not have a firewire port you can buy a firewire PCI card to install in the computer. Now you have to have software to capture the video. If you have WindowsXP the Windows Movie Maker should work. I use the convertor in Roxio Easy CD Creator 6.

If you've read this and you're now scratching your head, you can just go out and buy a capture device that is USB 2.0 compatible and be done with it. If your computer is less than 5 years old it most likely has a USB 2.0 port. The quality and speed of the capture might not be as great as the firewire though.
