Due to the car gods (a.k.a. my friends) leaving me this nice little message....

And with a little help from some inflammatory remarks (go figure) :? from Glenn

consider it motivation to get your ford to the track and prove its a Chevy.

Work has been continued with increased vigor. Spent all weekend at the shop prepping body panels for paint, ripping out the dash and cleaning the interior for the roll cage to get made. Also blasted 20+ years of grease, road crap and misc. automotive fluids out of the engine bay so it can be painted. Oh and let's not forget the wonderful allergy causing experience of ripping out the A/C system. So here is the updated pictures of my hooptie. It's finally ready to actually go back together and become a CMC car! sniff....sniff......  I'm so proud!

Anyone who has ever done one of these fiberglass hoods please give me some insight on technique and materials. I was very careful not to sand through the gel coat but still get a good paint surface.

DA sand80/100
Deep fill use glass/resin.
Minor imperfections/scratches fill w/bondo.
Treat it no different than steel.
Throw some primer on it.
Give it a light dusting with a rattlecan of contrasting paint as a marker.
Wet sand 400 the marker.
Ready for top coat.

Rsmith350
07-19-2008, 02:52 PM
ok....question #2. Besides the pics of the roll cage plates....can you guys take a look at these photos and see if you see anything wrong with making something like this for the race car. These are pics of a radiator/fan setup that I just did for my truck and was thinking I could do the same for the car.

Also going to try and find a radiator that will fit in the stock location that has an oil cooler and tranny cooler built in like this one. Unless someone can tell me otherwise.

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m189/rsmith350/radiator/101_0333.jpg

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m189/rsmith350/radiator/101_0334.jpg

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m189/rsmith350/radiator/101_0335.jpg

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m189/rsmith350/radiator/101_0336.jpg

The aluminum was free (love working at a machine shop!) and the two fans were $60 a piece (lifetime warranty) Radiator was $178 (lifetime warranty) So that puts me at $300 for a setup that should cost $600.

If all goes well with the car radiator I'm thinking of fabbing up a couple of kits for anyone that might want them.

Thanks in advance for the help ya'll!

Adam Ginsberg
07-19-2008, 03:05 PM
Looks good. You'll probably have to use a relay and switch setup to fire up the fans, depending on current draw. Remember, there's 2 types of current draw - inrush, and continuous. Inrush can easily blow a fast acting fuse - Ford/Lincoln Mark 8 fans draw 80amps of inrush, ~22-24amps continuous.

On my former street car, I used a 50amp MAXI fuse, 75amp Bosch relay, an inexpensive switch (since I had the relay), and a light to indicate fan status. Similar setup in the CMC hooptie.

Plastic end tanks....blech.....

Rsmith350
07-19-2008, 05:24 PM
Plastic end tanks....blech.....

No kidding! Those are the reason I had to replace the radiator in the first place! Those things suck! But I shouldn't complain...198k+ on the original radiator is pretty good

Thanks for the electrical suggestion AG! I was gonna edit the post to ask about that as well.

as for radiators, i've had good luck w/ the $150 ones from the dirt track shops. get one as wide as yuo can fit.
i also have had good luck w/ radiators that have oil coolers built in. the car seems to run hotter (water and oil).

David Love AI27
07-19-2008, 09:31 PM
my car runs hotter with the fan on while racing and the single fan is not enough to cool it while sitting on grid... I have learned to cope with limited "idle" time... at Hallett I had issues when running very close to the car in front for a long period of time, not sure if additional fan would have helped... I tried running without the air dam at TWS which was a big mistake... with the air dam, no fan and no traffic the water temp stays under 200 even on a very hot day...

GlennCMC70
07-19-2008, 09:49 PM
ducting is key. all the air that gets into the duct must be forced to go thru the rad. also for 4th and likely 3rd gens - dont remove the weather seal from the rear of the hood at the cowl. that is a known high pressure zone and will cause the air to "back up" under the hood and reduce the flow thru the rad.

Great pics Glenn!! Thanks! That's exactly what I needed. Jury is still out on the fans...everyone uses different setups so it's hard to know what works and what doesn't and it seems every car is different. Probably gonna go with a large single fan on a switch so I can turn it on in grid and off when racing. Hope to be so far up Burch's *cough* bumper that I will need to switch it on

Just kidding, congratulations sir! So I figured I would at least get some valuable info for my third gen brothers in the mean time. I took some shots of the headers in relation so the canton oil pan so it would give ya'll an idea of what you're working with. The passenger side has a TON of room but the drivers side is going to be a little interesting. For reference this is the 15-244t Canton pan and a set of "shorty" headman headers. Enjoy. OK everyone. i am sorry for the informality of posting here but I need to focus on getting my life back together after this weekend and I owe it to ya'll to tell you what's going on.

This Saturday afternoon I was pulling out of my neighborhood and stopped in a turn lane by an eighteen wheeler. He decided he was going to turn right instead of left. He proceeded to take off the front end of my truck with the back section of the trailer.....wait it gets better. After flagging down a police man to document what the idiot had done, he ran my license. License came back suspended due to warrants I did not realize where pending (7 of them) Just being honest here. Please don't judge. I got out of jail @3:30 this Monday and am now $2000 poorer. On top of all of this my boss is furious with me and I may not have a job tomorrow and my girlfriend and her family are dis-owning me at the moment. I am going to see about buying a new truck tomorrow and still owe a ton of money on tickets I bonded out on. Couple this with the shop burning down before the hurricane and a myriad of "normal" crap going on in my life I am officially putting my CMC aspirations on hold until I can get a lot of this sorted out. I know a lot of you guys are gonna want to talk to me and I really appreciate everything that you guys have done for me but right now it is just all too much. I need to focus on getting things straight and as soon as this is over I will be calling to check in. Thank you guys for understanding and I will be in touch. CMC #86 is not dead, just on life support. I may be selling some brand new stuff to re-coup some losses but I will let you know. Thank you to everyone in the CMC family, I couldn't ask to be associated with a better group of people.

Hey Ross, been there done that... not too proud but it happens... get your stuff together and get into the racing thing... after I got into this thing, I straightened my life out, ALOT!!! just ask my family... spend more time in the shop, spend all extra cash on the car... look at life VERY differently for example one speeding ticket is at least one race tire... I will come down and help with the car once you get "back on track"...

Hello Gentleman. Life is starting to look up. Work has resumed on the hooptie and I have made great strides in the last couple days. Motor should be almost completely finished by tomorrow. It will take a little bit for the car to actually move under it's own power due to money constraints. I'm changing jobs (taking over a Firestone store) And I need to let the funds build back up to a comfortable level before I dive back into buying parts. I've decided to go back with alot of the original parts just to get it moving and will wait on all the cool suspension and lightweight stuff i.e. Driveshaft, etc. So I am back in the fray and praying that it gets Done before MSR-H. We also may have TWO new bowties that are gonna join the series. (working on two cars at once) More to come later and a ton of build pics.

Good to be back! :)

David and J.B.- I swear to god I will call ya'll back, Things have just been nuts. Thanks for your patience.

Hey guys! Sorry for the long hiatus but things since the Hurricane have been just stupid crazy! Yes, but sadly it was too far gone to make into the race car... There were a few parts that made their way into AI #67. I think the only parts left are the tail lights.

Ha! Hopefully in the race, not on a flat bed. Don't worry, I cleansed the cage from all the "Glenn" that was left on it :).....there was a ceremony involving burned fuel and left over tire rubber. :) In all seriousness though, it dropped straight in with only minor adjustments so it couldn't have been to tweaked. The front half is getting completely redone anyway.

Get the engine/trans in that thing and check body panels/doors for fit and give me a call. I hope to have the mustang done this weekend or next and have a few tweaks to Misty's Camaro by Hallett. At that point, I have tons of shop space to take on a project....just wish I had Air Conditioning!!!

Keep chipping away at that list of "to do's".

Why are you going to re-do the front half of the cage?

That part was tweaked a little and I would prefer a different layout. I'm fat and it didn't lend well to egress. I'm sure you understand that concern?!.........cause we have video :)

That had nothing to do with fat. It had to do with dexterity...or rather a lack thereof

Ross, if you want to block off the two ports on the top of hte exhaust manifolds, just use 3/4" straight-thread oil drain plugs with crush washers. I'll dig up the part number and send it over. Gary R and I run them, no issues.

Find some EGR blockoff plates for the backside of the intake manifold and pass side exhaust manifold, a lot cleaner and reliable.

OK, at the very least you can practice cutting them up and then use Morgan's for the "production" versions or spares.

I've bent spindles before, two different vehicles. I got talent like that.
