Great motorsport ambassador... didn't really start racing untill he was in his 40's.

Certainly a racing humanitarian that will be missed.

"Here's this 80-year-old guy who weighs about 125 pounds guy thowing this sprint car into the corner," recalled the four-time Champ Car king. "I mean, these things are powerful and then he gets in too hot and rides up on the wall. Thankfully, it came back down on all four wheels instead of flipping.

Puts the "too old to do something you want to do" in perspective, yeah?

PLN was a great man,

I was sad to hear the news that he was so ill several months ago. I was lucky enough to prepare several cars for him and Michael Brockman. PLN was 78 at the time and was faster, more consistent, and professional than the Trans-Am Pro driver that I was lead mechanic for (Tomy Drissi). I remember he took a long time to climb in the car with his Hutchens device and gear. It was my duty to help him in the car. He told me before the last qual run at the Runoffs, "why don't you kick me in the nuts before I get in, maybe it will get me mad enough to drive faster, on second thought by the time I am in the car the pain will have gone away." I replied, "Just think, most of these guys think you are just happy to be here." He was a competitor everytime he was behind the wheel. He was so pissed that weekend that he had the best car and was only like fifth fastest in a field of 30 or so GT1 cars...

He is an inspiration in so many ways. Many people have said "when I am that age I just hope to be racing wheel chairs in the home". He did not think of himself that way. He came to win and always gave his best effort. I was lucky to spend time and get to know the legend. There is a small tribute to him in the PST showroom, photos of the car and team from the 2002 SCCA Runoffs.
