This is the bunch that was at ECR for trackside support.
I swiped their flyer of the restroom wall late Sun.
They are just around the corner from me.
I'm considering them for tire purchases.
Before I called them I wanted to query those here that patroned them this past weekend.

How was the shave?
Prices?

thx,
jb

Steve bought a set of 888's but I didn't ask him the price and he doesn't look at this forum either.
They would be convenient for me as well. Is Boudy not selling tires next year?
I did buy some leftover SRF from them-well really I dealt with Bobby Archer which I found interesting.

the fact that Bobby is part of that outfit is enough to turn me off. i do like the idea of having trackside support, so i'm torn. i know this is the guy who did all of the Bobby's shaves that so many folks had issue w/. he also said he will be doing all the shaves for Speed TC/WC. i'm pretty sure Vilvin is doing all that.

Not sure about the Shaving, but I'm pretty sure that Vilven will be the supplier of the tires.

From SCCA Rules 2008:
2.9.10: Tires & Wheels
2.9.10.1: TIRES
2.9.10.1.1: The official tire supplier of the specified Toyo tires is Vilven Tire
(800) 251-0017. Vilven Tire is the sole source of the actual tires to be used
within the World Challenge series. Please contact Vilven Tire with any questions
regarding the tires, or to place your order for testing. The official supplier
of the TOYO spec tires for the World Challenge series will be assigned a
specific location in the paddock for the entire event.
Due to the number of cars we have competing in the series, any teams registering
for an event after the posted registration deadline must contact Vilven
Tire directly to let them know that your team is coming, and order the tires
your team will need for the upcoming event. Failure to do so may cause your
team to not have new tires available to it. Teams should also contact Vilven
Tire if they expect to use more tires than normal at an upcoming event.

I had 4 shaved, they asked me to come by after the first one to see how it liked it before comtinuing... my car has too many issues to know if it was a good shave or not... they DID aks if I wanted the corners rounded and asked a lot of specifics that I couldn't answer... Rob had some shaved... $115.00 to shave 4 switch out 2 and balance all 4..

I had two shaved but declined on the balance. Drove the car straight to them after the next session for a balance. The shave job looked good to me.

They were courteous, as quick as they could have been, and the pricing was reasonable.

I have had a set of R888's on order with Vilven for over 2 months now. :x

I can't remember how all this shook out for next year;
You can run RA1's or R888's but only the triple 8's will pay Toyo bucks?
255/50/16 still the max for CMC?

Tony G just replied to me that he just picked up 10 16's and will be getting 4 more on Monday. i asked for his supplier info. i also asked that he call Toyo and check to see if its just a Vilven issue.
has anyone called Phill's?
does this AutoComp shop have any?

jeffburch
10-31-2008, 01:16 PM
I have 4 already.
I'm good.
T bucks expire tho.
I haven't called Phil because the freight rate across the miss. river is high.
The above info on Acomp scared me away.

I called again yesterday.
Spoke with the man himself.
He said there is no tire shortage.
He just doesn't keep inventory during this time of year when there is no demand.

Call PST...AJ has a few in the "shed". He had prices posted in the For Sale forum. Got my new R888's from him this weekend. Funny I have had 8 of these tires and not one of them has been on the car yet! LOL!

I'm on my third day too Glen.

All I ate at the track were hot dogs, but that must have been it.

I finally got up the nerve to try solid food again. So far OK.

But seriously, glad your doing better...

candy ass my ass! i was about to puke in my helmet for almost all of R3 and R4. had i had enough time between R3 and 4 to think about it, i likely wouldnt have run R4.

Glad to hear you're feeling a little better. Try a couple spoonfuls of honey for the runs. My MD recommends it as his preferred alternative to Immodium or Pepto and it works for us. Much easier on the system and will give you a bit of energy. Also BRAT diet will help. (Bread, bananas; rice; applesauce; tea)

Imodium got me to work (I have no vacation or sick time), but I am still pretty weak. I was getting pretty dehydrated too. I seem to be more or less back on track now. I don't know how you made it through R3 and R4. Mine started Saturday evening and I was almost afraid that they would get the car fixed for Sunday.

I think Glen was right, probably a timing chain. Best guess right now is that the valves are OK, but if you guys have other experience I am very interested to hear about it.

Al Fernandez
02-04-2009, 04:17 PM
Brad (or rather Jason Swindle in Brad Simpson's car) blew a timing chain and about 3 valves went with it if I remember right. Ping him or Nick Steel on the national site to get more details.

OK, thanks Al. For about $100, I think we are putting a new timing chain in it and trying it. Otherwise, we will have to buy another used engine AND build a competitive engine later in order to keep making it to the races.

Ouch.

I was by Richards machine shop this week.
The LT1 was out of the car and dissasembled.
Cam sprocket bolts loose/broke allowed cam to walk around.
Cam/lifters all dinged up. Almost all the valves bent from coincidence.

I was also by Auto Comp this week to have a R888 shaved. This tire is junk as it wants around 9oz. of weight to balance. Hoping maybe a knife could remedy. No one was there (though the guard dog was) but it didn't look abandoned. Phone disconnected. Uhg.
