RICHMOND, CA (Dec 03, 2008) — The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) announced today a change in NASA's spec tire program for the 2009 season. Beginning January 1st, 2009, NASA's spec tire program will transition from the required Toyo RA-1 tire to the new R888 tire as the RA-1 is phased out of production. To assist with this transitional period, competitors will be eligible to use the Toyo RA-1 or R888 tire for the first 2 race weekends of the 2009 season in their respective region. This change was enacted to allow competitors ample time to use any remaining tires they may have left over from the 2008 season. After this period, the Toyo R888 will be the only tire allowed in the Toyo tire classes.

Additionally, during the 2009 season, the Toyo R888 or RA-1 tire will be permitted for any regional races declared as a "Wet Race" by the race director at that particular session. This provision will apply to regional races only. Questions regarding the spec tire program can be directed to our competition manager at competition@drivenasa.com.

Shortages of the R888 are a bitch aren't they?! LOL!

I guess I might have to do the Houston event now to protect my track record if Downunder runs RA1's...

guess I'll run AI for the first two weekends, then back to AIX, unless I get some work or win the lottery... may have to run the entire season on "hand-me-down" tires and fuel that I siphon from my fellow competitors... anybody wanna give me a ride to the banquet???

Your discount tire must be better than mine. The guy at mine said 255/50/16 was $260 / tire.
I told him everyone else was around $200 and he said his cost is more than $200. Toyo must be pretty proud of their fancy new tire.

Wow. Mine were 205 each for the 275 40 17's. I plan to pick them up in the morning. I'll let you know if there is any difference. I'll also get a quote for your size just for grins. You could always race AI, you know you want it. FMR

There is not a shortage of Toyo R888 tires at this time.

I just ordered 8 Toyo R888s 255/50-16 this past week and I have a UPS tracking # for delivery this next week.

And I will be ordering 8 R888s 275/40-17 on Monday morning.

I guess every discount tire works independently.

I just called the Denton store for a quote. Got $249ea (275/40/17). Told them I could get them from another local source for $208ea and they came down to $215.

Won't need any until early March, but just wanted to test the waters.

Show me someone selling them for the correct $195 or less and takes Toyo bucks and I might think about ordering new tires. Otherwise, I am going to roll on the plethora of RA1's I already have!
