Marcus Gronholm takes on Pike's Peak in a bad ass Ford.
Should be like Phelps swimming in the Olympics...a cut above the rest.

I predict the course record will fall.

...if I was independently wealthy, I'd be on a plane next weekend to experience that event.

Never enough time or money for the Bucket List.

If you have google earth, key in directions from Truth or Consequences, NM to Silver City, NM and follow the route on Hwy 152 as you go over the mountains over to silver city. It's part of a national park and I drove it on Thursday in a Kia Sportage 4x4 rental. Brakes were pretty hot and the tires were a little tortured but hey, it only had 1500 miles on it....700 of which I put on it! LOL!!!!

If you have google earth, rotate the screen over to see the elevation with the route highlighted and then follow it from beginning to end. It was a helluva fun time even though the car sucked. I dogged a vette to get out of my way and I think I had it locked in second gear for atleast 15 miles. I REALLY want to rent one of the C6 Vettes from Hertz and go back and do that route again. It was better than the drive from Raton, NM up to Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Penasco and back to Las Vegas I did a couple weeks ago, but the Northern Cimmaron National Park route was more scenic.

(i think ya'll know i live in colo springs now)

Every year, there is a group of people which complains that the Hill Climb damages the mountain's environment. I talked to one of the folks one year, and environmentalist that I am, I still couldn't understand the concern. In the end, I just said "it's a road, which is above vegetation, on the side of a mountain. and besides, if it was really a violation of nature, all of the cars would go over the side."

He has a long uphill climb (pun intended) to beat Monster Tajima.

grunholm is a badass but he doesn't have the track knowledge or the power. Tajima has 1000hp+ and been up that mountain 100's of times. I have money that says the Fiestas don't break 11 minutes.

Tajima has the record at 10:01 right....? Rod Millen had it for years at 10:08....and the new record had another mile of asphalt under him!!! Millen was KING of that hill in my mind.

You could be right, Matt:

http://www.moderntiredealer.com/Channel/Retailing/News/Story/2009/07/Falken-driver-Monster-Tajima-takes-on-Pikes-Peak.aspx

Tajima is the veteran and the record holder @ 10:01:xx....there are 3 "rookies" in the unlimited division, but I hardly consider Gronholm a rookie. One of the others is Mark Rennison of BTC fame...awesome driver, but probably not of the same ilk as Gronholm.

He looked good. Tajima's car sounded like it was having engine issues...?

Honeslty, I could care less about the unlimited cars....the sounds of the high compression big block V8's are what get me all giggly!!!

I really want to try this someday...

I wish I was in Colorado this weekend.
Check out this award winning short film of the 1988 record run.
Apparently a cult classic amongst the Pikes Peak crowd entitled "Climb Dance".

Beautiful video, but the speed wasn't that impressive. Marcus was holding back his first time out.

Think I'll drive my Fiesta to work tomorrow.
