15.17.1 Driving Suits
A driver is required to wear a suit that covers his or her entire body except for hands,
feet, and head. Driving suits shall be one piece carrying an SFI 3.2A/1 rating or higher
(3.2A/5, 3.2A/10, 3.2A/15, or 3.2A/20) or FIA 8856-2000, FIA NORME 1986/1986. .

I was always under the impression that you had to have a double layer firesuit or a single layer with nomex underwear and shirt.

Is this the case?

I am thinking of buying a new suit for next year and OG Racing has some awesome pricing on single layer SFI 3.2A/1 suits and some with SFI 3.2A/5.

I really want a lighter suit for the hot days.

If you get the single layer you will have to wear the nomex underwear. I did this for the first year and it was blazing hot!! I would definitely stay away from the single layer.

James - the better 3.2/5A suits can be light. However, light = ex$pen$ive.

The next time your @ MSR-C, go to PST and check out the light suits they carry.

Don't get "one piece" confused with "single layer"

Jackets with seperate pants aren't legal.

I have used both:

Went the cheap route for myself nomex underwear does not breath at all and the black nomex leaves black lint all over your body

I'm currently use Amber's or Jason's $500 suites much more comfortable

Definitely pony up for the more expensive suit. I went with a multi-layer cheap suit from G-Force and it was unbearable. Way too bulky and very, VERY hot. I used it for two weekends and sold it for about half what I paid for it and was glad to be rid of it.

And if you're too hot, get a Cool Shirt setup -- makes all the difference in the world

That is what I was told, but I didn't see that in the rules anywhere.

I've really been happy with mine. Glenn has a silver one and mine is black. I know I paid a lot more than the above ad. I think the suit is discontinued or last year's model.

From the CCR ...

15.17.2 Underwear
Approved long underwear made of fire resistant material must be worn with all suits except those carrying a rating of SFI 3.2A/5, 3.2A/10, 3.2A/15, 3.2A/20 or FIA 8856- 2000. Underwear certified to SFI 3.3 or FIA 8856-2000 is strongly recommended in all cases.

As Mitch and the ccr states, it has nothing to do with number of layers, rather the fire rating.

Thanks for the help... I think I will just stick with what I have now. It fine for pretty much all but TWS in August.

The perceived multi-layer requirement has to do with the past and fabric technology. In the past, only a two or three layered suit would meet the required SFI specifications. A single layered suit was automatically going to require underwear.

Suit material technology has come a long way and you can now get single layer suits that have a sufficient rating to not require underwear.
