View Full Version : High engine idle

My Camaro has recently developed a nasty habit of idling around 1600-1800 rpm. It even accelerates from my desired mph just to reach the higher rpms. Have any of you run in to this problem before? I'm guessing a bad sensor somewhere.

Does it change if you turn the AC on and then off?

Sounds like an idle control motor. It sits on the side of the throttle body.

Easy to swap out?

A plug and couple small screws, IIRC

Typically it makes the car NOT want to idle at all. In other words, it fails with the idle closed, not open. A safety thing, I guess.

Here's a guy in Houston that has a whole throttle body for sale for $40

Kingwood for $35

Just make sure they have all the sensors and electronics. I have a bare TB for an LSx car ... just no electrics.

take the IAC valve off and clean it. it sticks off the driver side and has a cone shaped plunger in the center only visible when removed. they can get carboned up.

also ensure the T/B butterfly is closing all the way.

I have seen this a few times also. It gets dirty and won't close completely. I have to clean mine on my street car every once in a while with carb cleaner.

Do you have a check eng light on? Have you had it scanned? I'm betting it has a code that I had in my 68. Check for vacuum leaks as well.

The wierd thing is that is doesn't do it all of the time. When I start the car it idles around 1100. After I get going is when it idles around 1600-1800. When I stop at a light or sign and the car has warmed up a little it idles around 800-900. Once I start going again the rpms come right back up.

Had the same problem on mine, cleaned IAC and problem went away for awhile, replaced IAC...no more problem :)

got a vehicle speed sensor in those cars that affects idle speed while moving?

Any luck getting this fixed? My 68 still seems to be doing this some. I'll try to remember my scanner this weekend to figure out what the code says.

I changes the idle control motor and it didn't fix the problem. I does change when the AC is on. It gets much worse.

1300-1400 w/o AC, 1800-1900 w/AC

Look back a page or a few months and I said to check for vacuum leaks.

Had this same problem with my mom's Mercedes last week. They took it to the dealer and they wanted $7,500 to replace two shocks and hydrualic suspension pump. I got involved to talk to the tech and he said that might not fix all of it. Service manager didn't know anything about how the suspension worked. Had my parents pick it up and take it to an independent in Frisco. For $90 bucks he fixed the wires on top of the shock tower the rats ate through, but it still needed a shock. So out the door for $2,100 and works perfect. One shock is the same as our limit for all 4! Gotta love German engineering.

I did and the damn rodents chewed through another hose! And, of course, it was way up under the cowl next to the firewall.
