Tire update. I spoke with Appalachian tires today. They were told in a letter from Toyo that RA-1s will not be available until next year. WTF. FMR

AJ at PST had one more set of unshaved 16" RA1's last week. Try him and see... good luck!

Then I guess I'll buy some Hoosiers , put their stickers all over my car, race my purty car in AIX and flip them the bird back

Phils has a few sets left, but seeing I haven't had my first born yet to offer up in exchange, he can keep his fucking tires!

Also, for all....expect a nice price increase with the new boat load of tires. Heard as much as $30 per tire.

That'll help car count.

But, it's speculation and rumor at this point. far be it from me to spread rumors and start sh!t on the internet.

Hoosier pricing as listed on the internet:

P255/50ZR-16 26.2 82.2 9.4 10.5 7-9" 8.0 24.0 $240

I paid $258 for shaved RA1s???

Can you tell I'm not into bondage??

Don't forget about the peformance difference between a new set and one with a few heat cycles. The fast A sedan guys use a new set every race or two.

Its a lot more than $18 a tire on 18s.
275/35/R18 - $359 (Toyo RA1) vs $300 (Hoosier RA6)
The Hoosiers were better performing for me as well.

AIX here I come. I mean if I am going to finish last I might as well finish last in the top class :)

So what is the pressing reason to buy a set of anything TODAY? Seriously .. SERIOUSLY!

Why not cross the tire bridge when it gets here.

EVERYTHING to this point is rumor and hear-say.

Its just frustrating for those of us with bad OCD. Plus there are only 3 months till our first race. Maybe we should run AIX next year, pick an available tire and go. Same fun level, no dyno hassels, ummm. FMR

I know everyone is looking for new tires to use their Toyo Bucks on, but what does it matter what the date codes are? I ran all year on 05/06 date code tires with some 888s thrown in for good measure.

I'm sitting on some used 06/07 RA1s to run next year and waiting until the last moment to send this year's Toyo Bucks in.

I ran all the practice sessions at Utah on 04' rains I got from Robin last year at Midohio. They were easily 1.5 to 2 seconds slower than the 07 fresh stuff I had on the car on Sunday.

Fresh tires are nice and needed in this region with all the close racing in CMC.

Back to RA-1's...

I just got off the phone with Phil's Tire Service. Large shipments are due in January, but there is a long backorder list that will consume most of that. Call your favorite supplier and get on the order list, I predict a mad scramble when they come in.

I should be set for January - you better be ready. Glenn - you should come on the tires you ran Race 1 at ECR in October, those were awesome. In fact loan some like that to Wirtz, Mosty, Francis and Roberts.

I spoke with Stan Chen yesterday evening. He is the head of the motorsports division with Toyo(boss of Angela who issues the "bucks").
They are not doing anything with the Toyo bucks that expire in Nov. or Dec. even though there is not a single RA1 available to buy in the country. He said that since the R888 is a tire we can run for the first 3 events of 2010 we should use our Toyo bucks for 888's.

I asked him why they wouldn't just extend the expiration date on the Toyo bucks that we "earned" and he said that he has had long conversations with the powers that be at NASA and they have come to the agreement to leave it as is.

Personally I think it is all a big pile of shit!!

Add to the fact that we might not even have tires before the first event and it makes it even better. :x

The more people I talk to (Toyo distributors) that more I laugh at how big a freakin joke Toyo is. I'm getting the feeling that this "new RA1 availability" is going to be a bigger mess than the 888 was, or RA1 was, or 888 was, etc.

11-05-2009, 02:11 PM
Force you to buy a set of tires for 3 weekends, and another for the next 3. Yeah, from a salesmans perspectice that's a great idea! From someone that has to stretch their tire budget, that's crap.

Oh well. NASATx will see their car count drop by one til I get some RA1's. Sorry.

ShadowBolt

All I have are 888's (one set at that). I have $100.00 in Toyo Bucks plus whatever we get for third in season points in CMC2 for 2009. I have not even looked, are the 17's available? That crap Michael was told is total horse $hit. What about Hankook? I know they would have a tire that would cost way less. Telling someone to buy those POS 888's is wrong. If NASA agreed as Michael was told then NASA really cares about us.......just like we always knew they did.

Jerry, from my knowledge there is not a set of 275/40/17's in the nation. I talked to Appalachian Tire and he said he has 1 tire if I happen to piece together 3 more.
Rob, I have not looked for 16's b/c I was planning on running CMC2 next year and was going to start with 17's.

I would concur with Micheal's find.

AJ at PST found 4 for me in a warehouse two weeks ago. I have since sent them to Steve as I have enough tire to get me through a weekend or so.

It sucks ...

How about anyone with RA1's has to start facing backwards. I'm not sure that would make it fair but it would help. I guess I will be on 888's for the first race of the year......at least.

If I were wirting the rules for a brand new series with a control tire (kinda like AI & HC have, hmm) - I'd be hard pressed to spec anything besides the BFG R1 if it really is as good as reported. Hoosier grip and RA1 lifespan

He lives in the Houston area.

Well, Tire Rack has R1's in 275/40/17 for $244 ea right now, and the KDW's are like $135 ea. I might grab a set just to give em a try.
