View Full Version : getting ra1s

Guys
The best intel that I have been able to get is that Toyo will begin taking orders and sending tires to dealers the 1st of the year. I am working on getting a real number of what the US inventory will be on that date as that will determine if we're facing a mad scramble for the few that are there or if everyone will be able to get what they want right off the bat.

Anticipating that the former is more likely, I am working on getting tires prioritized to those that race first. No guarantees I can pull this off, just trying to make margaritas out of all these lemons.

It would help me a lot if you guys could let me know if you are needing a set for MSR-H or not.

Thanks for stepping up Al...if it was just you I had to rely on for this holy Grail I'd be willing to run AI but I prefer the drama of tight racing over tight logistics...no Toyos needed for me....hmmm maybe I should talk to my new client about tires now that they are out of F1 ;)

I have some information regarding RA1s I thought you'd be interested in:

- Toyo will begin accepting orders from dealers for the RA1s and shipping them tires on Jan 4th (well, Jan 1st technically, but they arent open until the 4th...)
- There are plenty of 16" 255 and 17" 275 tires on a boat as you read this, so there will be plenty available for dealers to fill orders immediately
- Considering time for your dealer to get the tires, shave them, and send them to you, expect delivery to driver's homes to begin around the 19th of Jan.

In other words, its going to be a little tight, but there will be tires before any of us are on track. No need to try to prioritize shipments or anything like that it would appear.

Regarding expiring Toyo bucks, I know Appalachian Tire will accept your order and cash in your Toyo bucks right now and deliver when the tires get here. I know other dealers will make similar arrangements. You should give Tommy Schlender from the rockies a call as well given he's a fellow AI racer as well as a Toyo dealer and he's always willing to do whatever he can to help fellow racers out.

I chatted with Tommy via email... yes, he shaves tires for the RM region.. he had some at Nationals and I should have bought them then..

Look him up on the memberlist and shoot him a PM..

I hope to have a "shaver" before year end, so if you find good price on RA1s from a supplier that doesn't shave them, check with me @ the beginning of the year. You could have tire shipped direct to me and then send me your rims or I plan to have a set of different size rims that are trued at a machine shop so I can run a dial indicator when mounted to the shaver...

ps I'm looking for a GOOD machine shop to "true" three or four rims. not looking for the cheapest, looking for the best..

I can't believe we aren't allowed to run out the 888s bought on good faith. "RA-1 only" was a pretty draconian, and costly, rule change.

What does it take to get an 'official' regional exemption so everyone is on the same page?

I need new tires anyways and will hopefully be on RA1's, but have no issue with anyone running R888's anytime next year.

Since the consensus is they are inferior, why are they not allowed until they run out? Could be bargain rains if there's still inventory and dealers are itchin to ditchem.

Ideally, my thought is yes, you should be able to use up the tires you have in those first 3 weekends. In reality tho, we have some guys that only make 3 weekends for the entire season and if those weekends happen to be the 2nd, 4th and 6th weekends, I wouldn't want them to be 'punished'.

Maybe in standing water the 888's are better but how would they be any better in just wet conditions? I don't see how.

You will never be able to properly police when it is "raining" or not. You have to allow the R888 for all conditions or none.

My vote is that they be allowed for all conditions all year long.

It's the same reasoning for allowing RA1s all of last year.

The cost of going racing is high enough without throwing away perfectly good tires.

Guys! I just got the call I was waiting for from Treadzone in PA. He says that he has 24 tires (255/50-16), shaved, to the door for $920. If we get more than one order they can be shipped on a pallet to save some of the shipping cost (save and extra 5$ per tire). Let me know if you are interested. I haven't checked on the 17's yet but I'm sure he has these as well.

I just got off the phone with the sales guy at Treadzone ( jspecht@treadzone.com ). He said that he currently has 5 sets of 16's ready to be shaved at $920 a set delivered. He will have 17's in next week ($924/set!! delivered). He DOES take Toyo Bucks and he also has his own contingency for tire money. Anyway, email him directly with your order, specifying the tread depth you want them shaved to. Over and out.

This public service announcement has been brought to you by Midnight Oil... something we all seem to burn just before a race weekend.

You all need to be careful where you get your tires. Make sure the dates are current.
Those tires 255/50-16 at TreadZone currently have a date code of 2007

Prices have gone up about $5 this year.
I will have NEW date coded 275/40-17 RA-1s very soon. I will know more on Friday or Monday.

Brian Harrison - New to AI
He has been racing in COMMA at hallett for a number of years.
His car has changed a lot in the last month. It was super charged and running 315/30-18 R6s.
After a motor change, super charger removed and new Forgelines, he should be ready for round 2.

Sorry Gary,

Back then most of these tire people did not have tires in stock and some (like John) could not take the Toyo Bucks and hold them until Toyo got tires into the US. I can tell you that John takes care of everything I need for the race car. When I put the new motor in the 17 he quoted everything I needed and was higher than Jegs. When I told him he was high he still wanted the order and matched Jegs prices. It's really nice to deal with someone that has good contacts to find the parts you need and at a good price. Unless something has changed Phils will be way higher than John (or anyone else for that matter). I purchased from them once and the freight alone was as high as giraffe Pussy!
