I'm thinking of replacing the Touareg with an F150 SuperCrew and I'm wondering how well it tows, particularly with the 4.6l 3V engine. (trying to convince myself I don't need to spend more for the 5.4L engine.)

Anyone know of a good deal on a use SuperCrew? (09-10 preferred)

I've driven an 09 F150 SuperCrew with 4.6L 2WD(rental). Its kind of a pig(not horrible) unloaded but gets 19-20 mixed from my experience. The 5.4L definitely has more guts but 15-16 mpg mixed unloaded. The 5.4L will tow a lot better, the 4.6L will be downshifting more.

2009-2010 F Series

4.6L 3V 292 hp (218 kW) and 320 lb·ft (433 N·m)

5.4L 3V 320 hp (239 kW) and 390 lb·ft (529 N·m) ratings on e85 biofuel

wait for the 400hp/400tq ecoboost TT v-6 next year... its supposed to be rated at 11,300lbs max and pull mid 20s mpg unloaded!

I sometimes tow with a 99 Expedition with 260 hp 300 tq and it does just fine running 70 mph all day long with my heavy trailer and car on int.

Rob is probably right.....I'm biased. I've been towing with a diesel for 7 years.

My dads Chevy I tow with has the small V8 and has done fine over the last 4 years or so.

Hey Robert,

I tow with an 07 F-150 that has the 4.6 motor. I would suggest going with the 5.4. My truck pulls fine but struggles on hills (was more of an issue going to Hallett). The bigger motor would solve that issue.

From a mileage perspective, I typically get 15 mpg around town. The 5.4 should be about the same.

I also had to put on leaf spring helpers to balance the load better. Otherwise, good to go.

I'm driving a 2010 Ram 1500 as a company truck. I'm very impressed w/ its power. I would now consider it over a Chevy if I could buy a new truck.
It has the Hemi, but I'm unsure of the size.

When comparing trucks you must consider the rear diff gearing. Otherwise its apples and oranges. FMR

We've been using our '08 4.6L F-150 and it's been fine, but hills are definately noticed. It's got the base 3.55s and 6700# tow package.
Our car is at least 400# heavier than most everyone else and we've typically got the bed loaded down (that smoker ain't light) - still...the 5.4 has come to mind from time to time ;)

Disclaimer: I'll drive all day with the cruise on and start complaining after 30 minutes with my right foot on the gas pedal.

That said, I've been using my parents' 2006 GMC Sierra with the 5.3l engine and 4-speed auto this year. Driving from Houston to TWS, even some of the overpasses caused the truck to downshift into 2nd revving to about 4K rpm.

The truck motor didn't like being revved that high but I could anticipate the hill, add throttle ahead of the cruise and prevent the downshift. However it was not what I considered a relaxing drive.

I think the new F150s with the 6-speed auto won't need to downshift quite as severely, maybe 4th instead of 2nd.

2nd disclaimer: Based on some other rather dubious requirements, such as towing huge travel trailers or towing the Camaro while carrying a truck camper, I just bought a 2010 F250 diesel. Since we have given up on the truck camper idea, I think that an F150 would have towed the race car just fine and been a much better daily driver. I would have gone with the 5.4, but then again I just bought a frigging diesel.

I have an F250 Powerstroke.

I wish I had my old GMC HD 8.1 back.

I test drove an 09 with the 4.6 and one with the 5.4. Didn't care for either of the trucks as a whole and went with the '08 Tundra I drive now but of the two the 5.4 is worth every penny if you're going to tow a car

That said... brakes are smaller, less power, negligible difference in gas mileage - get a Tundra  :x
