I got my transmission back together and in the car. Seems to be shifting fine. Hopefully this A-5 will survive. Also put a gutted thermostat in the car to slow the water down thru the radiator. I'll be at MSR-C on Friday, 13-Sep if anyone wants to come out and drive on my guest pass. I should get out there by 9:30'ish and run until early afternoon. If I can get thru 4 full 30 minute sessions without overheating, I'm going to call it a day...

I'm crossing my fingers that everything works well as I haven't finished a weekend since ECR in 2011 due to mechanicals and it's getting damn tiresome to always wrench on the car... Can't blame anyone for the issues as it's all my doing (or lack of)...

Kudos for sticking with it after a long string of bad luck. What have you started doing differently with your car prep to expect different results? What have you decided were bad choices? Might be a great idea to do a lessons learned with the rookies or guys looking to start builds so they don't get frustrated along the way.

The main issues I've seen so far...

#1
Issue: Sticking it out with a stock T-5 tranny. I've managed to get 7-8 events out of them before they go "pop".
Resolution: Upgraded to A-5

Issue: Running a fuel pump with no A/F ratio sensor. Ran lean at MSR-H in Jan 2012 and popped my new stroker motor
Resolution: Bought a A/F ratio and ensured it matched the dyno.

Issue: Engine overheating.
Resolution: Put a gutted thermostat in the car. Free flow was fine for a 300HP 302, but ran the water too fast for the 325HP 331.

Issue: Torque arm bushing failure (Griggs)
Resolution: Remove the bushing and bolt the T/A directly to the crossmember. Does cause a bit of axle hop, but that's manageable.

Issue: Clutch cable failures
Resolution: Wrap clutch cable in aluminum foil tape, put heat wrap over that. Built a heat shield from 0.100 aluminum and bolted it to the bellhousing to shield the clutch cable closest to the headres

Issue: Hub failures (not mine, but Michael's)
Resolution: Check freeplay before each event. Start with regreased new units using AmsOil racing grease.

Issue: Misc electrical gremlins (circa 2006)
Resolution: Replace 17 year old writing with painless harness

Issue: Rear upper and lower torque box failures (not mine, but Michael's)
Resolution: Weld in reinforcement plates BEFORE it's an issue.

Car is getting close to what I will call "Randy Ready" ie. not race ready. Hood could use some massaging along with a fender but should be okay with a little duct tape across the front. I'll register tomorrow but no reason I can't start trash talking right now. Once I register then you can call it a good looking field but that's until that Liebbe guy shows up-serously good to see some guys back in the saddle. I'll be happy to take that third podium spot away from the 55 if some of the trophy girls and Mid Slackers R US aren't racing. He better hope Ross doesn't forget my cold BL-I have some catching up to do after working to much on the car at Hallett. Though I'm privy to a car with some new door decals that is chomping on the bit to get on the podium, too. Should be a lot of fun.

SI-slap some RA1's on it and see what it does to compare lap times. I don't know the power/weight ratio but assume you would still be under the AI limits. Be interesting to see Corey have a car that he actually try's to stay on track with. Would make the starts easier if you guys were AI.
