    Hallett Carnage

Most know I was fighting a fuel pump issue most of the weekend, which I recovered from late Saturday. Well, in Race 4 I found something else to break which took me out of the race. Here's the culprit:

Completely sheared front hub on the passenger side. The only thing actually holding the wheel on the car was the brake caliper. Good thing I was close to pit entrance when it happened...

This was a brand new O'Reilly's hub going into TWS where I got a total of 5 sessions before I broke the rearend. I checked it Saturday night at Hallett and it felt fine. I noticed no warning signs leading up to the failure and was actually going fairly easy as the car was running pretty hot. Thoughts?

Wow...that is pretty scary. I have had a couple of hub failures...but that the first I have ever seen like that before.

Damn! Have you taken any side impacts to the front wheel? Maybe a spin or slide into a curb...?

I can't see the braking force alone shearing a hub like that. Unless you've recently made the F1 brake upgrade.

<-- Just added "check hubs" to my pre-race check list.

Nope nothing like that. My last off was at ECR last year and it was pretty minor. This hub wasn't even on the car then. F1 brake upgrade.....hmmmm....can I run FR500 ABS with that?

The failure did occur under braking (for turn 6) but I have a hard time believing that was the cause as well. I've always thought my brakes were pretty underwhelming and they were even worse than usual at Hallett. I probably just lost the roll of the dice on a Chinese part.

Found an interesting old thread on CC though about the unique nature of Hallett causing brake failure on Mustangs a while back. Maybe it's applicable to my failure, maybe not...interesting read either way:

If you can fit it on your car, I'm sure the rules will be adjusted 30 minutes prior to nationals to allow you to compete.

At least it broke at the end of the weekend. I went to Hallett 4 or 5 years a go and broke a rear axle on the first lap of practice on Sat morning... Boudy was kind enough to let me drive his ol' 55 car on Sat....

Robert, maybe you should just bring a rental racer up to Hallett.... I think Mosty and I have more seat time in your cars than you do....
