Martin's got the cake
Got the engine back today... new bearings, cam, lifters, pushrods, valves, screw in studs, adjustable guideplates, springs, retainers, rocker arms... ugh.
It's "in the car". I have about another hour and a half to get it started... I'll try and get a few heat cycles in the engine to put a wear pattern on the bearings before getting it on the trailer.
Also completely redid the chassis side of the 3-link mounting..
Gotta love coming down to the wire.

Wear pattern on bearings? I thought rings broke in and bearings wore out.

Rings are "old" in this case so already have a good pattern on the cylinder walls. Bearings just need to get happy with the crank.

You gotta make sure you wear through the babbit and have copper showing for the bearings to be broken in properly.
Make sure your oil filter is full of copper looking paste after break in.
This way you know your engine will have a great, long life.
Did the pistons leave the holes?

I was actually thinking of running without bearings to increase my oil capacity and reduce the friction and parasitic loss in the oil pump. It would also save some weight in the engine to run without bearings.

I usually just skip all that mess and leave the oil pump off. It's just parasitic to keep spinning the oil pump pushing all of that high viscosity fluid. No oil and no oil pump means a lot of parasitic drag and weight lost!
