Freshness of Tires are one of the few things you CAN control in a spec class. In my opinion it is the exact opposite of his line of thinking. A spec class only amplifies the need for the best tires to be on the car.

I'm confused with your confusion since you are basically agreeing with him? The basic premise of a spec class is that all the cars are equal and that you can't spend your way to a performance advantage. Yet the freshness of the tires has given us a situation where those who are willing to spend absurd amounts on tires do have a small performance advantage. If you don't have the best tires on the car, you are at a disadvantage in a spec class where everything is supposed to be equal.

The rule he is proposing is trying to force everyone to be on equal tires for the whole event without buying new tires for every session.

Lou Gigliotti decided to import Nankang tires. Here's a 200TW 255/40/17 for $159.

    There's a 100TW version as well.

Wish they came in 275's...I just don't want to lose 20mm of tire width on cars that already can use everything they have...

Is tire shaving allowed these days? Since all I got is 16" wheels on a 3rd Gen, I'll be rocking these 255/50/16 RA1's possibly shaved if allowed. (I know I won't be a front contender for awhile and I won't be buying super expensive tires anytime soon)

I might even invest in these 275/45/17 RA1's while they are a good price:

you won't, they run wide. Ran a set of used ones on the Vette at Cresson last weekend. NICE tire. reminded me of the old RA1 but not quite as resistant to heat.

It is my understanding they do fall off lap time wise over the life of the tire but if the set that I have had 8 hours of WRL "arrive and drive racer" drive time on them, they still have massive amounts of tread on them and they work well....even on a 3400# beast.

Hope to soon run them on the CMC car in the 285/18 size....just have to get the exhaust header found.
    Ah, fugg it.
