Tires, not only a CMC issue

Wish they came in 275's...I just don't want to lose 20mm of tire width on cars that already can use everything they have...

Is tire shaving allowed these days? Since all I got is 16" wheels on a 3rd Gen, I'll be rocking these 255/50/16 RA1's possibly shaved if allowed. (I know I won't be a front contender for awhile and I won't be buying super expensive tires anytime soon)
