I was at qualifying and I have to say that was the most viscous hit I have ever seen.

I was truly afraid we were witnessing a death in racing.

The grandstand area around us were almost silent except for a few gasps.

It was really refreshing to seem him get out of the car.

Kyle Petty said it was not as hard as it looked. He said it's not how fast you are going it's how fast you stop!

I have been watching the series for some 23 years now, maybe longer but that is as far back as I can remember... we also had season tickets back when I lived about 20 miles from MIS.

I have heard a number of people in the office today talking about that crash and stating it was one of the hardest and the scariest ever... I guess this is all coming from people that have only been watching for the past couple years, I pulled these all from memory, if I sit down I could think of twenty more that were harder and scarier than his crash this weekend.

It was a hard hit and a little scary, but I would not put it in the top 10 just yet...

I have not watched the linked vids yet David but Michael Waltrup at Bristol shook Darrell up so bad he thought his brother was dead. Hell the 24 hitting the wall a few weeks back was way harder than the one this weekend.

On another note I never thought DE's hit was that hard at all. There still has to be something to that story that we will never know.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7lag5dkCBkImpressive, but he's no Michael Mosty! ;)

Seriously, though. I think this is the worst of the group, with Michael Waltrip's crash running a very close second (getting slammed by another car, at speed, with half your car ripped away can't be good.)

It's stuff like Junior's crash that keep me awake at night.

Seat belts were mounted incorrectly and failed! It was in the report that was posted a few years back.

Bill Simpson was quoted a number of times that he and his tech staff had advised RCR and NASACAR that the belts were not installed correctly. DE and RCR did not like the way they were mounted when corrected and had them change them back to the old mounts.

Simpson had received death threats and actually had people drive by his house and unload 9mm rounds... Good times!

Its definately good to see people walking away from crashes like that.
In other series I can think of Katherine Legge back at road atlanta, Dario Franchitti last year...very happy when safety equipment works

I knew there was something about the belts and Bill S. was saying it was not their fault but I never read up on it.
Thanks David for the info.

I was told that Simpson resigned from his original company, and had intentions of retiring... After a short period of time retired, he felt people were getting the impression that he was admitting fault in some way by stepping down and NASCAR never backed down, almost pointed the finger at him in a way. He then started Impact! with the intention of safety over volume sales and much better customer involvement.

BTW, my information is from someone that worked for Simpson(the company), they are headquartered in New Braunfels about 40 minutes south of Austin.
