Hopefully I will see you guys early wednesday morning....

After deciding to RE-CHECK my trailer hubs since January... I found the right rear hub rusted like it had been in the ocean for 3 years and slop on all the wheels. so starting at 9:15, I had a parts runner going all over plano looking for trailer bearings and races. luckily found them and rebuilt all 4 hubs...time for bed!

Too cool, JB.
Coming from someone who is SUPPOSED to be there, I will anxiously await the updates and certainly appreciate them.

Pick up the Nov. issue of 5.0 magazine on Newstands now. The incomplete field of AI Nats contenders are featured with a little writeup on each driver and their chances/efforts coming into this event.

Not a one Texas driver covered, but that'll make it even better when "the dark horse" comes from behind!

This is killing me. I know I don't have the skills to even compete at nationals but it's killing me that we (Team Jordan) did not go. I never really even considered it, but you only live once and who knows what any of our physical or financial situations will be in the years to come. If Chris gets on the podium (and I hope he does) I will really kick myself since Team Jordan can compete with him (or at least we did at Hallett).

McComb is not the only CMC driver supersizing his entry - Schotz is running CMC, AI and PTx.

Group A ran very well - a few minor issues (FFR tapped the tire wall in the first session, but no major damage).

Chris McComb has become one fast SOB! Nice work, Chris.

Unfortunately, only 7 CMC cars this year, but we'll still have fun.

Driver's meeting went well, tomorrow is our first day of racing. Should be interesting with the weather coming in.....

Yikes - the skies have opened.

First session out went well, Matt King (as I predicted ~20sec prior from the tower) was the first to loop it/go off. JWL was suitably impressed. ;)

Light rain at first, followed by much heavier rain during the session.

Impound/tech has changed (for the better), and provided the RDs/SDs follow the prescribed methods, it will work great. Kudos to Todd for typing up an excellent tech sheet to hand to the tech folks - they are dig'n it.

Ok - off to get a rain poncho!

Adam Ginsberg

The "John George" in Group A is an FFR driver, and nothing like the Texas John George.

AAMOF, he went off at the start and hit the concrete wall along the back straight, causing minor damage. Driver ok.

The tower was in pure disbelief that the CMC drivers were doing a standing start in the rain, and it went off great. Our group was, IMO, the best behaved on track with the fewest incidents.

The AIX drivers are running slicks (Hoosiers), ~500-600hp motors, and small clutches, so it's really no surprise they have difficulty in the rain.

Weather for tomorrow appears to be more of the same, possibly worse.

I am actually on 4/32 tires....did a couple of massive slide down the back straight at over 120...got a big thumbs up from the flag stand...most terrifying 20 minutes of my life but survived.

I have horse traded for some rains from robin burnett...he was reluctant to make the trade. hopefully I can improve in the rain today and pray for dry on sunday...but it isn't looking good for mfw...

to add to this. these are AI spec wings. the rule was re-written to allow for this very thing.

we have also learned that some regions interpret "pump gas" is anything that can be pumped from any gas pump. so the race gas at Cresson is legal per thier interpretation.

i'm now on the JB bandwagon. its total BS where this series is being allowed to be taken. we are now AIL (American Iron Light).

"Bandwagon"

Yes, excellent choice of words.

The bandwagon effect, also known as social proof or "cromo effect" and closely related to opportunism, is the observation that people often do and believe things because many other people do and believe the same things. The effect is often pejoratively called herding instinct, particularly when applied to adolescents. People tend to follow the crowd without examining the merits of a particular thing. The bandwagon effect is the reason for the bandwagon fallacy's success.

I'm sitting at the dyno watching the 1st pl. cmc car.
That car was way fast????

AI, X car spins in t7 at the start.
Ai takes the green???
then they throw a yellow.
AI field too slow and dont catch X.
X gets green and will catch AI formation too soon.
So somewhere in thundervalley they pulled the dub yellows and confusion ensued.
DD was 2nd and got boned!

Tommys chicken was fast!
MFW fought his ass off and looked great.
No challenges for 1st pl.
DD was at tech?
Downunder still has a ign prob I assume.

Just talked with Glenn ...

Shotz and he battled door handle to door handle to T7 and Glenn was able to get past.

Next lap, Bob Denton motored past Schotz exiting T1 and dove underneath Glenn going into T2.

Once past, he checked out. So much for an inferior platform, eh?

Rain has subsided, but because of extractions and tows, the session are cut in half.

Tomorrow has Shotz and Landrum on row 1 with Denton and McComb on row 2.

Edit:

Just talked with Todd and he weathered the storm fairly well. Just minor damage. When I asked about him getting the refineries back up, he said that they are under 5' of water. Could be a while ...

2. INTENT
Added (for 2008-not in 2007 ruleset)
Good sportsmanship is valued more than finishing position. This means clean, well-executed passing is to be a trademark of the series. Punting another competitor, or leaning on them to gain a position will not be tolerated. Car to car contact including bump drafting can result in an investigation and possible sanctions.

Highlights are mine. Just pass the trophies, Toyo bucks and other accolades down the finishing order.

Again, great job all of you! When's the new National CMC Champ's party?

There was little to no drama all weekend, right until the end of the National race. One of the folks doing the most shouting after the race bears the most responsibility.

It was a fantastic event. Group A was, without a doubt, the best group of racers with the fewest on-track incidents. Only 1 penalty was handed out for a driving infraction (on Sunday), and there was not a single bent car, even with the lousy weather (Group A always seemed to get rained on the most).

Everyone got along very well. Yes, there were some heated words in the tech shed after Sunday's race, but we kept a lid on it.

How is this legal and where did it get updated? I was looking for legal wings earlier, and when I saw this blow by at Mid-Ohio I couldn't believe it was legal..

Any rear spoiler (rear wing) may be used. The rear spoiler shall not protrude beyond the overall outline of the body when viewed from above perpendicular to the ground. Excluding endplates, the spoiler shall not be any taller than 11” from the deck of the car.

I don't see it updated in the tech bulletins either??

GlennCMC70
09-16-2008, 01:17 PM
the problem is w/ the wording. most folks looked at the intent and the known understanding of the word and built around that.
the rule as written says "overall outline". in that sence it includes the widest part of the car - most often the side mirrors. i have been assured this loophole will be fixed and and these wings will not be legal next year. the intent was the widest part of the car under the wing when viewed from above.

the fuel issue will be resolved too. expect pumps found at race tracks to be excluded from this "pump gas" definition. my guess is 94 will be the highest legal octain.

Let me explain the "wing-thing".

The 2008 CMC rules state:

8.5.4. Any rear spoiler (rear wing) may be used. The rear spoiler shall not protrude beyond the overall outline of the body when viewed from above perpendicular to the ground. Excluding endplates, the spoiler shall not be any taller than 11” from the deck of the car. The spoiler must fit securely with minimum modifications to the body and not significantly obstruct the driver's vision.

The key words are "overall outline of the body". Granted, it does say "when viewed from above". IMO, they are outside the "spirit and intent" of CMC, but the wording doesn't really support that.....and I did not want to go down a "subjective" path at the Nats.

As such, the interpretation was total overall outline of the body - including the back fenders. After some discussions at the Nats, they were deemed legal, but you can expect a rewrite in 2009.

Sorry, dead horse and all I know, but I can't help it;
If a rewrite is going to happen for next year anyway, why not clarify the rule to make it so CMC must use an OEM part? If the only issue is the Cobra R wing, then specifically call it out as not allowed...

Sorry, I'll stop again now...

BTW, Corn said that SM tech was going to take close to 3 hours because they were tearing down the top three finishing motors.

We went into the tech tent to check this out....wowsers. They pulled a center section, axles, front coil overs, cams, etc.

The tech table looked like a damn garage sale.

Tech had cam doctors on hand to check profiles.

And the verdict was?

Unfortunately, I don't know. We had enough on our plate working with Group A that I really didn't pay close attention to the other race groups.

Sorry, Jerry.

I guess our definitions of drama are quite different.

Given the fact you weren't there, it's impossible for you to define "drama" at this event.

Just read any DS post. Look at the bling wing pics.

Didn't need to be there. It's obvious.

Sounds like you did a great job at attempting to calm the seas, though.

That was one race. One race does not make the entire event.

Look at the bling wing pics.

Caused a stir on Thursday, then it was over.

Mitch - you are 100% wrong, and speaking about things you do not know first hand.

Sounds like you did a great job at attempting to calm the seas, though.

Honestly - it wasn't that difficult, as our group was great to work with.

for once i'll agree w/ Adam here. a debatable issue that arose for any given day didnt result in the only thing i remember from that day. off all the crap i was involved in, the time w/ folks i normally dont hang w/ at the track is the most memorable.
so just because alot of folks didnt like the wings and didnt like the fact that the rule was changed that created a loop hole that allowed them doesnt mean we all dwelled on this topic all day. it was one of many pages of a chapter that make up the book of CMC Nationals 2008.

How is this legal and where did it get updated? I was looking for legal wings earlier, and when I saw this blow by at Mid-Ohio I couldn't believe it was legal..

I don't see it updated in the tech bulletins either??

BUT if these are legal, who makes them? ;)

Bob Denton and Bryan White made them. I talked to them on Saturday. Nice guys. I think Sydney Franklin had one too. They are engineers. But i didn't them in their funny white suits or glasses?

threw together a gallery of shots for the sr editor of Engine Builder magazine today. He said that for sure some will be used for a spread and possibly on the cover.

http://www.corndesignsphotography.com/ebm/ - i'm using a new program for workflow and the gallery it made isnt the most user friendly. mouseover on the right side of the big pic and it'll give you an arrow to navigate through the rest.

Glenn I know you want the pic of you and all the OU chicks, but unfortunatly I dont own those so I cant post any of them yet. Will let ya know.
