View Full Version : 3-weekend rule for R888's

On the national board, there was mention of a region that allows 17's in CMC because everyone there was ok with it.

Could we propose a similar exemption to the R888's? Is there anyone that would be opposed to allowing it for the entire year? The only area I could see this being an advantage is MAYBE in a rain race.

As a part of this extension, all NASA spec tire classes will be going back to the Toyo Proxes RA1 as the required tire. This will become effective January 1, 2010 with a three-weekend grace period to allow the use of the previously allowed R888 tires.

Seems reasonable to me. I would not have an issue with running 888s for next season.

i'm OK w/ it.
but, do not show up w/ a new set. use up what you have and move back to the RA1.

I am perfectly fine with it....However...it needs to be spelled out if 888's are allowed for all races or just non-wet races.

Personally... I would like to see 888's allowed all year without any restrictions to wet or not.

Since mine only have two dry races on them I would like to keep them as rain tires and also if something happens to one of my RA1's I could use the 888's to finish the weekend until I could get a new RA1. I usually purchase 6 new tires but would like to only buy four at first since I need new wheels also. When you take the dyno, new tires and wheels, a medical, another years membership, and a entry fee for the first race it comes to over $2100.00 I will have to spend between now and the first race.

I would support a regional exception for open use, wet or dry, of R888's for the entire year. I have an almost new set that I could use as rain tires. Also, I woudn't disapprove if someone bought a new set of R888's. They may be the only thing available, at least initially, depending on RA1 supply. I'm sure Toyo and their dealers wouldn't mind selling a few sets.

How do we make this regionally "official".

If I can get my hands on some RA-1's in January, I would like to keep my R888's I have now for wet tires, or as just-in-case tires for the rest of the year.

Good thread Gary. Thanks.

+1 ok for R888's all season. I have a new (to me) set of RA1's, and a used set of R888's that I was planning to keep as backups/spares in case of a puncture or other issue.

Remember I have two 245/45/16's for sale for $250.00 for the pair. They are brand new RA1's shaved to 4/32 (or 2/16 or as we should say 1/8"). I paid over $500.00 for them.

So there seems to be plenty of support for allowing 888s all of next year for AI and CMC here in Texas. If you do not agree with this and dont wish to make that opinion public, please email or PM me. One week from today I'll post an official decision.

Jerry, Assuming this is directed at me, I'll have to consider whether or not to run 17's up front (possible 13" rotors) and 16's on the rear. That just sounds goofy. On that note, I have six MB 16x8 wheels for sale, and six fugly 16x8 "rain" wheels for sale.

Wade,

It was not directed at you. I thought you had already gone to 17's. They would be a great DE tire. Way better and less money than anything else. They did work great on the front with 255's on the rear of CMC17.
I'm not sure you will notice any difference in the larger rotors. Others may chime in and tell you for sure. I don't think my new car has as good a set of brakes as the old one does.

+1 ok for R888's all season.

+1 more; let's just race.

Sorry about the delay...

AI and CMC cars in TX regional events will be allowed to run 888s for all of 2010, rain or shine. This is a regional and AICMC only allowance, so prior to running somewhere else or with another TX class check with the pertinent officials. Hallett is considered a TX regional event.

This does not apply to NASA Nationals. Anyone competing at that event must be on RA1s.

For clarity - how long is this regional exception? 3 weekends, all year, ?. A small detail that you forgot to include.

Thanks.

So can this now be the 3 year rule? Anyone have any issues with running 888's? What about if it rains and I'm running 888's?

I'm fine with that. My RA1's are on their last legs, so I'm taking my old bald R888's in case I cord the RA1's.

If it rains, how about you run the R888's backwards. Don't think anyone would complain about that!

I would bet money that a corded RA1 will STILL be faster than a 888...

I have a brand new set of 888's I would like to use for rains, but I still don't now if I would draw a DQ for doing so.

I don't think anyone has an issue with running 888's in the dry because we all know they are slower, but running them in the wet could be advantageous over my slick RA1'S.

If full tread RA1's are legal for the wet, why would you or anyone have issue w/ R888's?
I would rather have RA1's for the wet (full tread). More water displacement channels.

WTF mate? can the directors send out a mass e-mail or voicemail if the rule changes but they don't want it in writing?
