CBP officers contacted state authorities who confirmed that the 1965 Volkswagen Bus case was still open and that the current owner of the car was an insurance company.

I wonder if the insurance comapny will resell it for the claim amount in 1974 or will they sell it at 2009 fair market value?

If sold for FMV, I'm sure they will reimburse the original policy holder any rate increase they passed along over the years.

Here's my favorite quote...

"This is a unique case that reflects our strategic approach in utilizing the best of intelligence, training and use of information in enforcing laws and regulations at our ports,” said Kevin Weeks, CBP director of Field Operations."

Gosh...that's some of the best creatove writing/sugar coating I've seen in a while! (Agents were probably overheard saying..."Hey Boss, Look what I found!")

This is the same government that wants to run your health care.

The previous owner saw the bus in the news and contacted the insurance co. for the oppertunity to buy it back... they said it was going up for auction and was worth approx. $25,000

I'd give the insurance money back to the insurance company and tell them "thanks for finding my car".

If they profit, doesn't the money go to the insured?
