So, I have been having a lot of side to side slop in my differential and figured it was the clutches wearing out and causing the slop. Well, I took it all apart today and found the kevlar clutches in the Eaton to be perfect, even after 7 years of use! AMAZING really!
Anyway, found the end of the axles where they push against the center pin on the diff had mushroomed and are significantly shorter now causing the slop. I found the right axle was .170" shorter, and the left axle was .154" shorter. Thankfully, I had a good spare axle sitting in the garage to compare to.
So, that .324" was a HUGE amount of slop in the rear end. I'm going to use the one good axle and try to find a couple more takeouts on DFWstangs or craigslist.
Does anyone have any good info whether or not hardened axles, like Moser's 28 spline, also have hardened axle ends...? Thankfully the pin is untouched in the diff so this should be an easy fix.
I did find that the outer wheel bearings were shot, however, to my amazement, the center diff carrier bearings were perfect. I guess that diff girdle is doing it's job!
Anyway, ya'll should check the ends of your axles for the same thing and you might find that extra play causing you problems. I'll try and take some decent pictures later.
