well sort of ...

Just a props to Bryan. Since taking his advice less than a month ago, my 401K is up almost $10K ... and I'm sure I've harpooned my destiny.

Very true. It's just nice to see the bowl fill a little instead of swirl down the drain.

its amazing how much age affects your outlook - I was selfishly glad to see things be down since I'm putting ALOT in right now... means I'm getting more bang for my buck. Oh well... :)

I dunno.
With everything at or near 52 week highs?
Why are they at this level?
No one knows why that I've spoken to.

Double dip?

Good luck.

Part of the battle is consistency and taking emotion out of it.

I'm having lunch with my guy tomorrow and will give him the "we're taking a lot of MY money into cash if we see the DOW at 9600" talk.

My 401k doesn't allow for expedient position exchanges.

For the longest time, neither did ours. But we have about a dozen or so choices on how to dispurse funds.

We are limited to 4 transaction/year and one a quarter.

Dude, that sucks.

It's really that bad? I tried a quick search for the plan docs online but didn't find them.

Check with your administrator; I found some data that indicates you might be able to "roll over" employer matching and any after tax employee contributions to a self directed IRA without taxes or penalties. That would get you some administrator diversity and many more investment choices.

And get your colleagues to submit, anonymously if necessary, complaints about the 401(k) choices - looks like you guys are on the "not so good" end of the spectrum.

Just so that I'm clear, choices isn't my issue.
It's the time it takes for exchanges to happen.
Not minutes or hours but days.
When the market noses over the side door is locked.

I dunno if you should be chasing such volitale stuff with your nest egg anyway. If this was separate have fun in the market money that'd be different.

It doesn't matter if you're in mutual funds or whatever.
When the Dow loses 600-800 points in one day, you've just taken a serious ass-whipping.

Mom's retirement fund went from $275K to $150K in 1 quarter... good bye sponsorship...

and when it bounces up 900 points the next day you shouldn't go out and buy a Ferrari. If you're not retiring tommorrow its not the end of the world. Gotta look long term, and shift towards less voliatle stuff as you get close to needing to cash out.

Thats Finance 101. I should know...
