F1 Experience

Landed in Abu Dhabi last night and got situated at the hotel.

Went and saw a client, Etihad Airways (and the "real" reason for the trip) this morning and picked up my F1 tickets from one of my buddies at the airline.

Saw one of the 2008 Ferrari F1 cars in the Etihad lobby. Man, they turn any surface into a wing or think about how to get air to another wing, or around the surface as efficiently as possible. They just add protrusions to the side pods, just to add more little wings...

Tomorrow I am going to go "dune bashing". Apparently this is similar to rock climbing, as they have several levels you can sign up to drive/ride. My "guide" (airline buddy) is one of the advanced drivers, but he's going on a beginner drive with me to help out the other drivers (10 total).

The support races prior to the F1 stuff are going to be pretty cool too (GP2 and Porsche GT3 Cup).

Linkin Park is playing a concert Saturday evening, which should be good. Prince is playing on Sunday, but unfortunately I have to get to the airport to come home (tear)...

Flight from DFW to Frankfurt, Germany was 9 1/2 hours
Layover was 4 hours
Flight from Frankfurt to Abu Dhabi was 5 1/2 hours

With time chages it was exactly 22 hours from when I left my front door to the time I was in my hotel. (32 hours with the time changes), I'm 10 hours ahead right now.


I've done a straight shot from Houston to Dubai once that was 15 hrs... way too long to be in a pressurized aluminum tube. :)

Missed "dune bashing" today... I overslept. I figured there was no way to oversleep if I went to bed at 10pm local time (noon in TX). I slept until noon local (14 hrs)... guess my body needed to "catch up"...

So, I'm at the hotel, "working" and trying to keep up with the western world.

Trying to determine if I want to bail on work for a while and go to "Ferrari World"... $65 USD is temping.

Extremely jealous. Mitch is right, get out there-you can sleep on your way home. Linkin Park is awesome, too.

The warmup stuff is probably better than the actual F1 race to me. But those F1 motors at 18k RPM or whatever are great for a hangover. You should be able to get in the pits and check out the non F1 cars as they are sweet.

And don't forget to get some pics for Mitch of the scenery.

Okay... the scoop on Ferrari World..... AWESOME!!!

The Formula Rosa coaster... about shit myself. Could barely keep my eyes open. 0 to 240kph (150mph) in 4.9 seconds. Not enough G's to pry the shit eating grin off my face... twice.

The simulators were awesome. Ran 5 sessions in the F430's. Got two 2nd places and three 1st place out of 8 racers. The hard part was trying to learn Yas Marina Circuit after never seeing a flying lap of in-car before. For being a desert here, there are some blind up-and-over types of corners. Ran 2 sessions with the F1 car setting. All I can say is those things accelerate and BRAKE!!! In the F430 I had to break from 240kph at the 150m mark. In the F1 car I would brake from 280kph at the 50m marker and still make the hairpin. One the first race by over half a lap (race is only two laps). Second race I got locked up with a car on the start, geesh, can't ordinary people drive a race car??? Guess they didn't know I had a NASA license. :)

There were more Ferrari's here than I've ever seen before. They probably had 12 on static display, going back to the 50's and up to the most current ones.

The gift shop, suprisingly, was really cool too. They had a bunch of "authenticated" race parts. VERY overpriced. Piston/Rod assys for $3000. An exhaust manifold for $10,000. Crazy. But they were on Schumacher's car... I guess it may be worth it to someone.

Got to see Felipe Massa. He was doing a guest appearance and had his whole enterage with him. I walked up the stairs and he was walking past me. I had to do a double take because so many people had Ferrari this or that on.

If you ever have a chance to come to Abu Dhabi and you want to be a kid in a candy store… this is it!!

Here is close to "trophy girls" as I could get. Etihad Airways is the title sponsor for the Gran Prix. Their flight attendands did a photo shoot on pit lane.

I don't have access to the main granstands, so I don't have pit pictures for any of the event, bummer... (but those seats wouldn't give much view of the track either. 6 of one, half dozen of the other).

Finally home, after getting to the airport a 2pm TX time yesterday... 25 hours worth of airport and flight time... Grrr.

Well worth it in the end.

More pics will have to wait, as I was delayed leaving Abu Dhabi and my suitcase (with the camera) didn't make the connection in Frankfurt. I should get it tomorrow and will be able to upload a few more pics from the race then.

The GP2 lead car crashed and I have some pics of the RF damage.

I need to watch the Tivo'd race at Michael's over next weekend and we are going to try and find me in the stands...

I ended up with only spending $250 out of pocket for the ticket since my airline buddy was able to get it a bit cheaper. There are some things that I won't put on an expense report and ask the company to cover. :)

BTW, hotels over there are EXPENSIVE, to say the least...
