I condensed it down to the best clips and still ended up with 17min of footage, it's a good thing I forgot my rear-view GoPro... my 'highlights' reel would be 2hrs long! Unbelievable racing guys!!!

My camera only caught the first 2min of R3, but it caught an extreme 'oh shit' moment on the start. I hit an area of the track they haven't paved yet and discovered how poorly my brakes work on grass (as if I didn't already know). Thanks to anyone that moved to avoid me!

Great to meet you this past weekend, hope to see you next year. Great meeting and racing you guys too. Just think what it will be like with all the missing folks and everybody in one class. One prediction... Glenn WILL spin in The Bitch. Unless he walks the track first and breaks something and can't drive.

Great race James! I had a blast holding off the charge while trying to get around Dan tha man, orange is definitely fast... just not as fast as red. Too bad turn 6 waited until the last race to bite me. Mid-turn, the front washed out like a mofo... and once again, I found myself picking grass out of my teeth.

Yeah man, the BL port-n-polish job is top notch! I recommend it to everyone!!

Mine actually sounds really sick now with my new, massive exhaust leak... I picked it up in R4 (probably when I went off). It caught me off guard when pulled off the trailer and into the garage, actually hurt me ears. I bet you can hear it in the video, haven't confirmed that yet.

So I pulled my car off the trailer and onto a lift today... The transmission is fine, but it turns out that I disentegrated the Griggs Torque Arm bushing. That led to the torque arm hammering up/down and breaking the driver's side crossmember bracket which is welded to the subframe connector. That "slop" allowed the front bushing bolt of the T/A to rotate into the driveshaft, causing the horrible noises. So, it appears that it can be fixed with about $100 worth of Griggs parts and a bit of TLC with the welder...

On the up side, I'm glad the bolt hit the D/S, otherwise if the whole crossmember dropped out of the car and under braking became a catapault... that would have been BAD...

Guess I had someone looking after me...

Pics to follow.

Something that has caught my attention viewing other people's vids is how many of you guys runs with your visors up (Sam, Eddie, Casey, JP, DF etc).

I know that for myself, one too many times during a middle of an autocross run, a spec of dust would get in my eye making for a not fun next few seconds. I can see not putting it down if you wear glasses (or sunglasses), or putting it 90% closed to keep some air circulating. I even went ahead and got a darkend visor to encourage myself to run with it down. Just my random Wednesday thoughts.

the fire protection benifits with the visor down are nice too.... and since you yokels sit behind your engine for whatever reason, extra fire protection isn't a bad thing

I keep mine open for air circulation, 95% of the time I wear sunglasses and to my knowledge I've never got debris in my eye with the shades on. I forgot my glasses in practice at Hallett and did get some dirt in my eye, wasn't fun. Even with the circulation of having my visor up, I still have to wipe my brow occasionally to keep sweat from getting in my eyes. With my visor down, I sweat more and can't wipe it.

I agree it's much safer with the visor down and my next helmet will have an air inlet (I actually own the blower and hose already).

Casey_SS
06-22-2011, 10:43 AM
I've tried to get in the habit of putting it down after driving through BL's wall of dirt at Cresson but Hallett was just too hot and I needed the circulation. I initially put it about 80% down on the warm-up lap but it was very hot, stuffy, and a little claustrophobic-feeling. I put it back up within half a lap. It's weird - I rode sport bikes for years and never had any sort of issue with a fully closed helmet...plenty of airflow on a bike though, next to none in the car. I'll eventually get a helmet with a blower inlet and all that....bigger fish to fry first though.

Thanks Mitch...never thought much about it but watching the video I'd have to agree. I'll take your advice and give it a shot....thanks for the links.

Got anything to keep my damn mirror from falling down? I was adjusting it 3 or 4 times every lap. I've also discovered the whole fish eye view isn't working for me - objects are closer than they appear but I have no idea how much closer. If you notice on several of my passes I'm perfectly clear (in hindsight) but pinch off the corner anyway because I can't tell whether I'm really clear or if I'm about to chop somebody's nose off. Yep... I have to have air circulation to my face or I get a claustrophobic feeling. I know it isn't the smartest thing, but I just don't feel comfortable with it closed for that long of a race. When I raced dirt, I did have to keep it down. You had to in order to see and we had no windshield to protect from dirt clods flying at you at very high rates of speed, but a race was much shorter too. However, during every caution I would still flip it up to breathe. It is wierd I know, but just one of my many quirks. :o

I have had a few specs of dirt get into my eyes, but I usually just fight through it until the race is over or rub them on a long straight.

Okay... Call me converted...

So, do you guys just put anti-fog on the inside of the visor?

Alien
06-23-2011, 06:53 PM
I havn't used or really needed any anti-fog stuff with my old helmet, but went ahead and got some with the new helmet (debuted at Hallett). I always left it just barely cracked open at the bottom before on muggy days. My new helmets visor came with an anti-fog insert to put on it. I'm not sure if I just don't have it on 100% where it needs to be, but now the helmet won't latch closed.

(Sorry to start this hijack, wasn't the intent, but maybe a mod can be split off onto it's own thread?)

Nice video. Mitch is right - you need some spacers to move the wheel closer to you.

Something else I noticed - nearly all of the drivers perform 2 downshifts going into Bus Stop - 4th to 3rd, then 3rd to 2nd. Have any of you tried downshifting from 4th directly to 2nd? FWIW, I did the same thing at Mid-Ohio - downshifting from 5th to 3rd heading towards China Beach.

Once I learned to do that several years ago, it made a distinct difference.

What's interesting about that video is how the fire moved from outside the car to inside the car throught the non-existent rear window and how he jumps out of the still moving car which almost pins him against the track wall.

Oh. and that's one hell of a fast Honda.

I'm no expert and I'm not disputing the fact that a visor will protect you from 1400* flames and replace it with 600* molten plastic nor am I advocating a rear window of some sort ... I am suggesting that everyone purchase a $69 set of basic hand tools and tighten your freaking bell housing bolts.

I did the 4-2 last year and blew up clutches, I rowed through 3rd this year and life was all good.

What he said. :D Solid motor mounts FTW. I think the moral of that story is don't race a Civic hatchback, if you do...keep the glass in it!

The CCR does say that you need some form of eye protection though. I like my visor up and wear ballistic rated sunglasses (Oakleys). As for fire, I got over the fear of burning in a vehicle some 2 tours ago. :p

I even spray the inside of the car with gas...just for fun...

All the cool kids are doing it these days :p

J/K - that looks like a file photo from a special version of the 'ol "Death on the Highways" video for road racers. Glad your air filter wasn't in the old location....that Murphy can be a pretty mean SOB.

I thought that eye protection was only for open cockpits:

15.17.5 Eye and Face protection
A full-face helmet with an impact resistant face shield is required in “open” cars (FFR,
sports racers, and formula cars) and highly recommended for all vehicles. Eye
protection is required. Face shields, safety glasses, or goggles all made of impact
resistant material are permitted as “eye protection.” However, the choice of eye
protection used, and the responsibility for any failure, belongs to the driver

You are correct. Face shields are required for open cockpit cars, "eye protection" is required for all.

Made me laugh, but I hope you don't get tired of people thanking you for your service.

Okay, so I'm 2 weeks late to the party, but just tried my hand at a cut rate editing job of R4 (2 1/2 min worth)...
