On June 11, 2011, Hallett Motor Racing Circuit again played host to NASA for what has been dubbed the NASA “Mini-Nationals”. This was a HUGE cross-over event with racers from the following regions: Texas, Rocky Mountain, Mid-West, and Mid-South. In all, the weekend involved over 30 cars and over 2 hours of track time.

The Hallett “Summer Shootout” was organized in true NASA Nationals fashion with one qualifying round on Saturday and three qualifying races each setting the grid for the “Shootout” on Sunday afternoon. R2 and R3 were inverts of the R1 and R2 finishing order, respectively and then finishing points were tallied to determine the grid for the “big race”.

Hallett has long been known to be hard on cars, but the carnage was unbelievable. Anything from transmissions, rear axles tubes, engines, fuel pumps, brake lines, power steering lines, radiator hoses, hubs, master cylinders, torque arms, head gaskets. You name it, Hallett destroys it. However, in true fashion, everyone was more than willing to share parts and time to get everyone back on track.

AI
American Iron featured the return of Chris Lyons from a much too long hiatus. We were all glad to see Chris’ face around the paddock as well as his beautiful baby girl.

Additionally, AI was “stacked” with an impressive 8 drivers from three different regions (Texas, Rocky Mountain, and Mid-South).

R1
Chris Lyons shook off the cobwebs quickly during the Friday practice day and earlier on Saturday to sweep the AI qualifying with a quick 1:26.515. The start of race was a “roast fest” as many drivers were trying to find the proper amount of gas to keep their RA1’s in check. Mosty and Lyons battled for the lead until Marshall’s clutch cable failed, leaving him with nothing but 4th gear. This allowed the back of the pack to start catching up, as Chris “checked out”. Dr. Frank Robertson was also having brake and charging issues in his #132 Mustang Cobra. Dr. Frank almost caught Mosty, but it ended up as a Lyons/Mosty/Robertson podium. Mid-pack battle were firece as Rock, Calder, and Dulaney fought hard for 4th thru 6th spot.

R2
Mosty was able to get his clutch cable repaired in time for the start of R2. During the very delicate rolling start, it was a game of chess to determine who would come out of T1 in first place. By the end of the first lap, it was again Lyons and Mosty duking it out for the top spots in AI. Frank Robertson was dealing with a nasty case of brake lockup going into T3, which resulted in several spins over the course of the weekend. The mid-pack racing was also intense with pressure from Eddie Rock, Brian Calder, Shawn Taylor, and new rookie Jim Dulaney all fighting for the last rung on the podium. In the end, it was again Chris Lyons for the win, with Marshall Mosty a meer .599 sec behind, but not enough to take home the top spot. Frank Robertson rounded out the podium for R2.

R3
Lyons was struck with the same bad luck as Marshall had earlier and retired with a broken clutch cable. However, Casey Holdway was NOT backing down. His Camaro SS was hooked up and dead set on his first AI win. Mosty kept taking chunks out of Holdway’s lead but didn’t have enough in the end to catch Casey. Congrats on your first AI victory. It was hard fought and well deserved. The same “mid-pack” guys were duking it out once again with no clue of who would finish 4th and who would finish 6th. In the end it was Holdway/Mosty/Robertson on the podium.

R4
The “Big Race” had Marshall Mosty’s ’89 Mustang on pole for the standing start. After the formation lap and what seemed like an eternity sitting at the start line, the green flag waived and Mosty jumped to an early lead over the AI field. Marshall never looked back until 15 laps in and the Hallett curse came to collect it’s next victim. In the end it was a broken torque arm mount causing the torque arm to rotate into the driveshaft. Mosty retiring allowed Lyons to win with an impressive 20 second margin over the 2nd place Robertson. Eddie Rock rounded out the “shootout” podium.

Congrats to Chris Lyons for the overall win after such a long “retirement” as well as Frank Robertson for 2nd, and Eddie Rock for fighting so hard for 3rd.

In the end, track records didn’t fall in AI, but Marshall Mosty had the fast lap of the weekend for AI with an 1:26.266.

CMC-2
CMC-2 saw the return of an old face. Morgan Dawdy returned to CMC-2 racing after an impressive “off” at TWS several seasons ago.

R1
Qualifying Pole went to Sir James Proctor with a ridiculous 1:27.783. The start of R1 was rather “ugly” as Ray Bob Coleman didn’t get his car off the line when the green waved and as a result, there was a “slight” argument over who belonged where on the track between Steve Mulder and Robert Boudreaux. As everyone did everything they could to avoid contact, it was deemed a “racing incident” and no penalties were assessed.

Michael Mosty powered his CMC #11 to the front of the pack and had a healthy margin until the sounds of a mechanical marching band and fireworks show led to what ended up being a crank split in two pieces, multiple fragments of block and even an oil pump split in two… Not too good. The Pole Sitter, James Proctor had a brake flare failure on lap 2 that put the two of the qualifier “podium” cars out. At that time, it was open to anyone to nab the top spot. In the end, this allowed Jeremy Gunter to scoot to the front for a win. Sam Crumpacker and Team Jordan rounded out the podium.

R2
As James Proctor finished last in R1 due to the brake failure, he was on pole for the invert. At the drop of the green, James put his head down and didn’t look up until the checkered flag was waiving him home for the win. Rock Mountain ex-AI racer Cody Powell took 2nd place and Dan Allford took home 3rd.

R3
With such a large CMC-2 field, the winners from R2 had little chance of plowing their way through the entire field. Team Jordan found themselves on pole for R3 due to their rear axle issues in R2. Unfortunately the “fix” didn’t hold and Team Jordan had to retire before completing the opening lap. In the end it was Gunter/Warren/Crumpacker sharing the podium. Mid-West rookie Greg Hampton was plagued by the Hallett gremlins, as they took hold of his RF hub and didn’t let go. Chaulk up another failure to the track gods…

R4
The “Big Race” put Juan-Pablo Proctor in 9th on grid, so there was some ground to make up. Over the course of the race, James picked-off the other cars as he waited for them to make mistakes. Patience was rewarded with a win! Congrats to James Proctor for the CMC-2 win. The rest of the podium was Jeremy Gunter in 2nd and Dan Allford in 3rd. Congrats also to Dan for running a very consistant weekend, which allowed for an awesome grid position for R4.

CMC
CMC saw the healthiest field so far this year with six cars.

R1
Qualifying Pole went to Jason Love with a ridiculous 1:29.906. Runyon and Francis rounded out the starting grid for R1. After the CMC-2 melee at the start and a hard battle between everyone, the finishing order was Francis/Love/Sealander.

R2
Hey, these CMC guys can run some good clean racing with each other… Who would have thought? In the end the “Orange is Fast” #39 of Dave Francis ends up with yet another win under his belt. Note to self: Time to rethink car color?? The podium was Francis/Sealander/Love

R3
Dave Francis is an animal, even if he in the midst of having his transmission fall out from under the car… Can anyone stop this guy?? Densmore and Love rounded out the podium.

R4
For the “big race”, attrition was the name of the game. Two cars didn’t even make a lap and a third retired after only three. “The animal”, Dave Francis finally realized that he’s only human and him machinery doesn’t like to be treated like the red headed step child, or should it be orange headed step child?? Anyway, after having a sick transmission that required double clutching to downshift, all forward motion was lost with a mere three laps to go. However, due to attrition, Francis managed a podium spot. The big winner was “the kid”, Jason Love, followed by Brad Densmore. Congrats to all the CMC drivers for one crazy weekend.

Summary
Thanks to all those who made the tow to Hallett. See you guys again at TWS in August or Hallett in 2012!!!

Now I just need time to sit down with pictures and put together a Ginsberg-esque writeup... (and figure out how to host it, as I'm not smart when it comes to internet 0 and 1's)
