I have to get a new (rebuilt ) rack and pinion. Rock Auto is $115.00 with a $167.00 core charge. Oreilly is $197.00 with a $100.00 core charge. Rack Doctor is free shipping both ways $119.00 $60.00 core charge. Anyone know if it makes any difference where you purchase one of these units? Anyone have any experience with The Rack Doctor?

Running an autozone special in my mustang. Lifetime warranty. look for an 03 cobra rack if you can find it reasonably priced. faster ratio and better "on center feel".

None of the rebuilds at Autozone are going to be distinguishable as far as V6, V8, or Cobra, so you take your chances. It works better if you can take your core with you when you go, to make sure the new unit matches your existing one. Then, keep your core! for at least a race to make sure that the new unit actually functions correctly. After you have verified, then give up your core. *speaking from experience.

If they are like the camaros (V6/V8 difference only on ratio), just take a wrench and turn the input shaft end to end to figure out what the ratio is. For us 4th gen Fbodies the V6 cars are like 2.75 turns lock to lock, V8s 2.25 lock to lock (I think).

Not sure if Turn One touches the Ford stuff, but they're good. My random fluke experience was a special situation that stays between me and Turn One.

As long as you get a motorcraft unit it doesn't matter where you buy it. They are about $200ish but have the ford logo and stock markings on them.

I ran an Autozone "Sport Steering" rack in my 89. It had the proper 2 turns lock to lock but the steering effort was lower than stock which didn't bother me when racing.
