Can somebody in Ohio send back daily reports? (No comments on the timeliness of our normal regional reports needed here) Just a quick and simple note is all. Those of us unable to attend would greatly appreciate it!!

I talked with Glenn around 2pm today.

He said they (Glenn, Nick, Adam, Todd, Robert and Jeff) were all within 100 miles or so of the track.

Incident free.

The track will have free wireless access in the vicinity of the kiosk. They will be broadcasting live lap times etc. The link is on the Nationals site. I should be able to log on and update yall daily. If I cant, Ill ask one of the others to.

My daily report for Tues day is:

I blew a trailer hub in Columbus Ohio last night. Couldnt fand anything at that hour. Stayed in hotel. Found a hub, bought a spare also. The spare cost less than a night in a hotel so, do the math. Now Im waiting for the rain to let up so I can hook up the trailer and bring it to a car wash to hide from the elements and do this emergency maintenance.

Lessons learned: Always keep trailer bearings maintained/packed greased. Always pack a spare hub. Bearing buddies may be a good idea also for when I dont have time to tear apart the hubs and pack them.

Micah went on to the track last night. It is raining cats and dogs and isnt supposed to let up until maybe tomorrow. He did happen to have spare trailer brakes in his railer, and the bad hub took out my brakes, so I did get lucky there. I also got lucky when I noticed the bad hub at a gas station, rather than when my tire would have fell off and made a mess on the highway.

So far so good on this trip.

YEP!!! Some of us went and looked at the weather histories for MO this time of year and planned on two full sets of rain tires to complement the 2 full sets of shaved tires.... Atleast the guys had some good rain race practice at TWS!!!!

The next group went out very quickly after the AI/CMC groups.

Looked to me like they sent them out in smaller groups.

After the group that had Glenn, Adam, Nick, & Jeff, then I saw John George in the next group.

Also, a lot of transponders only show numbers and no names.

I think they go back on track around 1:25 today, if they stay close to the schedule.

Looked like Nick only made 9 laps while most ran around 16.

Jeff was fighting for the lead and just pinched the car a tick too much ... spun. But his car still looked good.

Glenn broke an alternator bracket in qual.

A local friend found one and an alternator (shredded the alternator fan). The thrash ensued ...

Bracket, PS pump, tensioner, idler, alternator installed. No belt.

New belt arrived as Glenn took the green flag.

Ran the whole race w/o power steering! Finished 10th

Adam finished a strong 4th. Todd finished just ahead of Glenn.

Nick has had some nagging gremlins all weekend.

Micah/Jerry are animals. Running PT, TT and CMC. Powered by Red Bull and Twix.

I had the honor of working Argent Labs safety spotter in the Key Hole. What a vantage point. I could see the track out of T1, through the chicane and brake lights entering 7.

AIX and AI had decided to split their rolling starts. CMC would do their normal standing start.

The pace car was just creeping along at what appeared to be 10 mph. The AIX car were going so slow, they had to keep clutching the car.

I saw the CMC field come out of T1 and the AI field hadn't cleared the Key Hole. CMC ran down AI before AI was given the green. It was a mess.

There were lots of CMC folks who got screwed and there were those that benefited greatly ... namely Griffith. While everyone upfront was checking up for cars who hadn't been given the green yet, he was using everything between the fences to pass cars. He probably passed 10 cars through the chicane and Key Hole.

The front runners couldn't pass cars before they had been given the green. It was a cluster-fuck.

Griffith and Flahrety got past an AI car on the straights and Burch and Landrum had to follow the guy through 7 to 11. But was able to clear him and make up the "checking out" Griffith did in rather short order ... lap and a half.

Flarhety slid out at 11 and both Jeff and Glenn got by, leaving them with 2nd and 3rd. For the final 5 or so laps, the distance between the 3 cars was never more than 6 or 8.

Close, close racing.

It was an intersting phenomenon ...

It was TEXAS against other regions. And there was no animosity or shit-talking. It was just good, clean fun racing.

For those who chose brands over brothers, you just don't get it.

Texas racers garnered a lot of respect this weekend, regardless of what they drove. And Texas racers showed that we can all get along and race close, fast and have fun.

Mitch, that cluster as you put it was the same shit that happened at the previous TWO NASA events at MO...I read about them earlier in the year and the event in July was pretty bad....lots of unhappy folks in CMC....sounds like they hadn't figured it out yet...?

Either way, sounds like a great event overall and the texas crew cleaned house....I just wish I could have made it for the experience and to prove to myself if I could have done well..... :( Oh well, I guess Dave and spencer can come back to TX and we can see!

Guys, I was a witness to that bad start for the AI/CMC race. It was a bad deal all around, and it was the result of a simple mistake, not incompetence, negligence, or anything else. The start protocol broke down and the CMC cars were released very early.

For the record, I think a 3-way split start for that specific race was the right call, and should have worked well, save for one very simple breakdown in communication. The NASA folks at the top know exactly what happened and I'm certain that steps will be taken to change the protocol to prevent this from happening again.

(For those of you who don't know, I was the flag man at the front straight starter's stand for the AI/CMC race. I WAS NOT THE ACTUAL STARTER, but I did throw the checker.)

LT knows a bit more about the start, but I'll let him relate what happened.

I just finished reading through all the stuff you guys had available to keep up with what was going on. Wow, did you guys miss out on a lot. :D

I had a blast! I'm so glad I went even though I didn't drive. It was an amazing event.

Congratulations to Jeff and Glenn for finishing on the podium. A big congratulation goes out to Adam for starting 22nd (out of 23) in the big race and fighting all the way up to finish in 6th place. Truly amazing and it was very exciting to watch.

If you missed it this year, you need to try and make it next year. You will get to see who is crowned the first national champion for the new Super CMC class…

At this time, I think this is the stupidest idea to come along yet....I may change my mind later but you would think we would wait for something like this to happen until AFTER we get larger car counts and the AI fields were balanced....in other regions, more than 2/3 of the AI field is slower than the CMC field.....this sounds like more of an excuse for the REALLY slow CMC cars in other regions to just bump some power and go race in another class. Don't know too many people with the budgets to build these newer cars into real race cars just yet!!!

Bye the way....Glenn, I changed my mind and you should go run CMC-S!!! J/K, you are doing just fine! Keep it up.

James, back away from the ledge.

Matt, the sky is not falling.

Don't read too much into the rumor mill. Things are still evolving.

For power junkies and deep pockets, there will still be AI and AIX. Trust me ... there was some serious cash thrown at the top AI and AIX cars this weekend.

CMC-S is really a misnomer, IMHO. Think of it as AI Lite.

This means, Matt will be a shoe-in for the AI regional title just like Armstrong is for the AIX title. So, see ... you win!

CMC has too strong of a following and too strong of a base for it to whither away. Too many just like close racing using cars instead of wallets.

CMC-S opens the door for a LOT of F-Body cars and a few Mustangs. No F-Cars have been allowed since the 1998 year model because they were just too darn powerful.

Mitch, I think you are right about it being AI Lite....however, the point of the series was to keep costs down and I suppose you could but the cars that post described are rarely found in street form for less than $14k. My concern is that it would be smarter to walk before we run.

Also, why would I be a shoe in for the regional title? I am currently in Second place and Marvel has yet to throw in the towel. If you are referring to next year, don't count on me being so competitive given the recent events in my personal life. I hope we can work that out but more than likely, AI 97 will on the auction block soon and I will be forced to fall back on HPDE to get my thrills.....racing next year may be on indefinite hold... :( Or maybe I will just find a way and go race CMC?!

your missing the point matt. lots of guys already have the CMC-S car just not the AI budget. this will allow a guy w/ a 98 + f-body or an '05 + mustang a place to race w/ a CMC budget. will some AI guys step down? yes. will some CMC guys step up? yes? will this help w/ the overall growth of AI/CMC? yes. the wisdom of CMC cannot be denied. we cant ignore the new cars any longer. putting those cars in CMC would place a "ringer" in the class.

he cars that post described are rarely found in street form for less than $14k.

Just a data point but I've seen 3 LS1 6spd cars on Craigslist for less than $7K this month alone, 2 were under $6K. Yes, they were a bit rough. my track car didn't start pretty....

I'm uncertain of what to make of CMC-S. Sounds interesting. I also don't consider it AI-Lite as the modification allowed are far and away more restrictive than AI, they're no different than CMC. For example, other than the more expensive engine in an LS1 car, nothing else is really different than a 4th Gen LT1 CMC ride. (ok, 50hp more and 70lbs off the nose)

However, I also think you need to eventually open up the class or create a new one to keep it the lower series alive. there is almost a whole generation of cars out there that can't run the budget class. other than the 2V cars nothing else '98+ is legal in CMC with a stock engine.

My car did 280/325 stock. Now if if there is a way to knock of 25lb-ft legally and no hp loss it might be fun to play with....

DAMMIT WHERE'S THE RACE WRITE UP?? IT'S BEEN ALMOST A DAY!!!! ;)

Like everyone else said, it was a blast, and you should have been there if you weren't.

I've got a vision in my head, where someone with some editing skills takes footage from in-car and trackside during the AI/CMC race and overlays it with the recording of the announcer doing the play by play of the event... I'd buy it.

I have already seen few guys saying they are moving to CMC-S....that means CMC is losing cars already.

Seems kind of crazy to kill a class that is growing.

Clifton,

You're correct. The 96+ Cobras advertised 300-305hp. Which really meant 265hp to the wheels.

Neat thing is LT1s and LS1s advertised the same power but actually made those numbers (or just shy)at the wheels.

Don't forget about the 1/2 dozen or so cars ready to go CMC racing for the first time next season. You are one of them.

Sure, a few CMC guys will go the S and a few AI/AIX guys will go to S.

But the target owners are the phased out T2 cars. So, car counts will continue to rise.

Having heard first hand the discussion and questions, discussed the series with Todd and seeing the "evolution" of the rule set still on-going, I honestly think this is a great step forward for the series as a whole.

Remember, the key to keeping us ALL racing is car count.

With the modifications that are allowed in CMC wouldn't the Mustangs be able to make the 280/300 numbers that are proposed? Do you have any numbers for the 05+ cars? It sounds like I need to take my car to the dyno. Do we need to take this discussion to another thread? I hate being a highjacker.
