What is the weak link in the T5's? Does anyone successfully have several years of CMC racing on a stock t5 box?

I think the GM unit is stronger for some reason.

The GM "world class" box is the one that seems to live. I think those guys also use an aftermarket part/rear retainer to support the countershaft and keep it from walking. Correct me and Sean may chime in.

May be redundant for you:

Everything I have found is that 3rd gear is the culprit.

In five years of racing, I managed to tear up one fourth gear/input shaft, and two third gears. The first was a result of curb hops and offs as I was learning. The last was a result of my failure to notice a failing clutch cable and improper engage/disengagement.

My opinion is that a NEW T5 will last if properly shifted and not abused. A rebuilt 200,000 mile transmission just isn't going to make it more than a couple seasons. The cases flex and are just tired. I always liked the rules...you chose cheap, light, and moderate reliable (T5) or you chose more $, more weight, and more reliability (TKO). It leaves room to grow into a better trans as you add lightness in other areas.
