Yes, it used to be quite common but many other chlorinated hydrocarbons (aka chlorocarbon) have the same potential.
Yes, cumulative exposure at certain levels is very serious. Look at the label of products you use and make sure you check the MSDS and specifically the PEL (exposure info) for anything you are not sure about. Exposure of the compound to temps above 300C is very dangerous.
We did some synthesizing of chlorocarbons way back in college (I was an EE and since Faraday was the first to synthesize Tetrachloroethylene our professor thought it was a "cool" bridge between chem and electronics...just don't F' it up!)
Chlorocarbons are generally stable and are widely used as a solvent for use with a variety of organic materials which is why you will find them in cleaning products for clothing, furniture and paint stripping etc.
Tetrachloroethylene production has dropped but other low (molecular) weight chlorocarbons have seen consistent or even increased production (e.g. chloroform).
Focus on low VOC paints (Europe adopted many years ago but the US was quite slow) is starting to reduce the need in painting workflow but the stability and wide use means they are around.
...be safe
We used to use tetrachlor in the water plant part of the oil field I worked at, to do lab samples of oil in the water. Anyway one day a rat ran across the floor of the lab and I shot it with the bottle of tetrachlor I happened to be holding. Damn thing died right there on the spot! Dont take a bath in that stuff, lesson learned.
Don't quite know how to describe the last few days I was lucky enough to spend as part of the AJ Foyt team at Indy supporting the #14 car. Was able to be somewhat useful (not in the way all the time, just some) in the garage and during pit stops leaning over the wall to pull back the right rear tire and manning the starter in case of a stall. These were the highlights amongst trips to various race shops in Gasoline Alley for behind the scenes tours compliments of my mate Tom's (crew chief) connections, it was his 30th 500 race.
The race itself didn't start well for us, into the wall on lap one, thanks Sage... Sato's in car tells a different story to the ABC13 commentators. But the boys changed a bent toe arm, 4 tires and a mirror to rejoin 3 laps down. Working strategy on yellows we got back to the lead lap with around 20 to go in 28th position. The finish battle was epic between Montoya, Power and Dixon but what you might of missed was Sato working the 14 through the field to finish 13th. A great drive.
Best memory was AJ waddling down pit lane after Sage (who just finished making a dick of himself) to "whoop that boy's ass"
When I saw Sato limping in with a broken wishbone, I figured he was done. I was very impressed how you guys got the car back together with only losing 3 laps and the driver had enough confidence in the car to take it to the limit and get back in contention. Thanks for sharing the experience with us Craig.
That is awesome. This years race was pretty entertaining and had a great finish.
AJ has always been my favorite driver. AJ, Mario, Tony Stewart... all had the ability to win in anything and I always admired that about them.
This is probably one of Craig's friends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9LFgsLQATc

Who remembers playing this in elementary school??

Thought of Craig and his other race car...

What's the deal with a 318 Chebby? I've heard of a 262, 265, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 383, and 400 small block but never a 318. Poked out 302?

stroked 283...
3.37" stroke is awfully random. I wonder if the engine builder stroked the 283 crank? Either way that's pretty unique.
So I figured why my car was down a cylinder at TWS... The intake lifter in cylinder #5 decided to disintegrate... The pushrod (not bent) was sitting at the bottom of the lifter case. Not sure why this made the O2 read lean, but still need to do a full leak down before pulling the engine out...
Made an agreement with Trina that I could only do major work on one car at a time, so since the '57 just had it's engine redone, I will have to wait on this engine if it's something above/beyond a set of lifters and gaskets... Should have it pulled down in a few weeks. Just need a clear weekend day to pull it apart.
today: Drove from Houston to West Memphis, AR in the motor home with my younger son Sam. Driving to Kankakee, IL tomorrow. Why, you ask? To pick up my older son in Chicago on Monday afternoon and then head to Oshkosh. WI for the annual aviation fly in. My kids are crazy about airplanes.
Been there and done that. Flew in a friends Bonanza. It is an absolute blast and they keep the grounds spotless. Get a radio and listen to the tower controllers jump all over the incoming pilots not doing what they say. It is the busiest airport in the world for one week every year. The only thing wrong with the air show is that once you see it you will never enjoy another one again (other than the likes of the Blue Angles). We got to see Bob Hoover in his last Oshkosh show. The things he did in a Shrike Areo Commander was amazing. Many say he was the best pilot that ever lived.

You guys are going to see some cool stuff this year.
First airshow for the F-35 Lightning
First time ever for the B-52H to be on the ground for an airshow. I find that hard to believe but I read it today on Aviation ebrief.
Jerry
Not sure about the B52, I got to climb in one at a ft worth air show quite a while back, I remember the 8 throttle levers ....
I agree but this is where I read it. https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-n...-store-oshkosh
First time at OSH.

I was planning to fly to AirVenture this year but work keeps getting in the way. Y'all should have a blast. Weather is predicted to be nice.
Get ready for a great experience Rob! I have made the trek several times, the opportunity to meet Chuck Yeager, Bob Hoover and Paul Poberezny was very special. Pitching a tent at Camp Scholler and having a B-17 with P-51 escorts flying low for a wake up call was the best time ever! Seeing the Mig15/17's flying with F-86's was a close second. If you are staying the whole time, the workshops are awesome too. Put on your walking shoes and pick a direction, I have never experienced anything else like AirVenture.

The year we went they flew the F-14 Tomcat with the Bearcat in formation. The tomcat had the wings forward and the Bearcat had it firewalled. It was really cool to watch. The best was watching the F-14 stand on it's tail, hit the afterburners and disappear in about 10 seconds straight up. Also watching the Harrier land is cool and the loudest thing I have ever heard. With I was going to be there. The tower controllers are worth the price of admission all by themselves.
This was my favorite plane we saw in 1996 on my trip.

Just got back from Oshkosh last night. We spent three days at the show and I am very impressed by the entire experience. It is the best run event I have ever seen. The variety, quantity and quality of airplanes was amazing covering everything from a flying replica of the Wright Brothers Model B to an F-35.
Oh - we also climbed sand dunes and swam in Lake Michigan at Indiana Dunes State Park, drove the RV down Lakeshore Drive and through North Chicago, kayaked in the Missouri Ozarks, drove Arkansas Scenic Highway 7, camped at Degray Lake south of Hot Springs and burned a BUNCH of gasoline through 2,617 miles of the American Mid-West.
All this was just myself and my two sons, mom stayed home. :D
The rv down LSD, Hilarious. How was Degray? Drove by it on the way to Ouachita, loooked nice.
Going back to Ouachita this Labor day if anyone is interested? Its a great place
We usually make a trip to Ouchita every year with our boat. Mostly stay on Lake Hamilton and cruise to the restaurants on the lake, then spend a day or two out on Ouachita. I have been to DeGray and Lake Greeson. All are really nice lakes.
Got back Thursday from the 3,565 mile Universal Orlando, Myrtle Beach, Williamsburg, VA road trip.
The nice sheriff's deputy in Shelby County, TN pulled us over to remind us the road conditions meant we were probably following the car in front a little too closely.
Had a great weekend with the boys at Las Vegas. My oldest son took the vast majority of the pix but Shelby museum has already been posted so no need to repost and the rest will stay in Vegas.
Here's a couple that give an idea of the weekend.

Yesterday I played fireman and tried to put out the burning truck in my neighbors driverway. Once the fire department put it out, I was told by said neighbor I could have it for $300. 2001 ex-cab chevy with a 5.3 auto. Ran perfect. Fire was in/under the bed and got in the cab. Trans and motor are untouched. Got it in my driveway today. Pulling the motor tomorrow. Once I scrap the chassis I will have $200 or less in the motor trans to put in my $500 84 Chevy truck.
Computer/YT is being a turd, what was the best lap time?
Got the racecar out of the trailer finally. Will start on that job soon. Prep'ed the k member yesterday as well. Thanks again James. Got the motor and trans out of the burn truck and stored under the camper top of the 84 it is going into.
Those hand signals, I'd recognize them anywhere.

Well while you guys were racing, I at least worked on my car.
At first I was going to swap the K member w/ the motor in and then swap the cam w/ the motor in the car. Trying to keep my pile in as few piles as possible. Once I had the entire suspension off, I realized I couldn't drop the pan to do the cam swap w/ the K member in or the motor in the car. So I decided to pull the motor.
It is a good thing I did as the damage was far greater than I expected.
Trashed K member, trashed A arm, bent knuckle, 2 bent wheels, 1 of the OEM cast iron motor mounts cracked, one aftermarket solid mount bent and cracked, top half of the bell housing shattered.
Trans looks OK. The K member was pushed back about 1/2 inch. The holes the pins in the K member engage are oval and those pins on the K member are angled forward. Unreal that the rack wasn't cracked. The metal loop/bracket on one end has a crack half way through one of the spot welds. That happens on all 4th gens anyways, not crash related. And the OEM Y pipe is destroyed. May start over and build a set of duals w/ an X.
Still lots of TWS concrete falling out of the chassis.
I'll need one knuckle and a bell housing for sure. I have a cast iron motor mount. I'll need to order new solid mounts. Getting low on wheels now. Gonna have to find a couple new sets. I think I have a knuckle. I'll have to look.
Mulling over the idea of swapping in the 5.3 I have, but would need a lot of parts to make it work, and convert the trans. I so hate the LT1, but don't want to spend the money to switch. Wonder if I could run a 4.8 and cam it up like the Fox/SN95 guys. At least then I would sound fast.
Upon first inspection it looked like all I need was an A arm and I could run the rest of Sunday. The hit I took told me otherwise. I'm glad I didn't play "tough guy" and race it anyways. Lots more busted parts than I imagined.
Is there any video from your car? It looked spectacular from Francis' point of view. Is that water spraying? Nope, that's cement exploding.
