Right, that's how the firebird is, so my idea does nothing. Sorry! If you take the transmission back out, measure the diameter and lengths of the different portions of the input shaft, and compare to the old one.

Do you have a 3650? The one time we could not get the tran in we did have seating issues on the main shaft...it did stick out about 1/4 " - it could just be an alignment issue though. Car parts store close enough if you need a new bearing...lots of people wanting you on track if it just needs a nudge....bring it.
