    Should I run this tire?

I was going over my car for a final inspection and found a screw in my tire that was most likely picked up at the dyno shop. It went straight in the tire but did not go all the way through. The tire is not leaking at all and still holding constant pressure.

    What do ya'll think?

I would run it but then again the tire looks to be at the end of it's life.

    Question about tires.....
I have read where some say the tire is the fastest when they are slick like yours then I have read new tires are up to two seconds faster? I certainly don't know but would like to.

    Jerry,
It depends on the number of heat cycles on the tire. If you have more than 3 weekends on a set of tires, you'd probably pick up some time with new tires, even at 4-5/32's shaved. I run the tires until they cord, or have more than 5 weekends, but I'm allocating my "new tire" budget elsewhere.

Some only put 2 weekends on a set of tires and start at 3/32's.

Also, I've heard that the more "slick" they get, the more you can possibly run into the carcass of the tire and that is made from harder rubber than what you want to be racing on.

Maybe Richard P can chime in with some good tire tech.

    Jerry,
This current set of tires has 3 weekends on them, I am wanting 1 more out of them.
My first set of tires were full-treads and they lasted 6 events. The first 5 events felt good and then the 6th event they felt horrible. That was 1 1/2 years ago so I'm sure my tastes have changed.

FWIW, I get my tires at 4/32's and like to get 4 events from them.

I would probably run it. It seems the most likey thing that might happen is a hole happens and it leaks out. I wouldn't think it was cause any serious tire failure.

I have had to pull many rocks out of the tread over the last year.

    I averaged 3-1/2 weekends out 4/32nd tires.

I have to do something about tires. I bought two from Phill's last week. Yesterday I had them installed and I found the packing slip. He charged me $80.38 for shipping two tires to Hutto! $195.00 for each tire then $20.00 each to shave them. My bill was over $500.00 for two tires!!! I bought two tires from him at the end of last year but I did not look at the ticket to see what the shipping was and the wife paid the bill and did not say anything. I'm going to call him tomorrow about the shipping charges. I used to get VIR scuffs from Elkart Lake, Wi. and the shipping for tires twice the size of the RA1's was about $15.00 a tire. I hope it was a mistake. I like dealing with Phill but not at those prices. Jeff? The price to ship tires to Dallas or Hutto should only be a few bucks different.
