We, your series directors, have argued long and hard about what we are seeing after running some of the new for this year tire configurations and feel we need to make some immediate changes, as well as announce some changes to come in for 2009.

First, the immediate changes:
Effective immediately, maximum tire size for CMC2 cars is 275/40R17. No changes to CMC allowable tires. Further, wheel manufacturing/assembling method is no longer restricted, but your wheels must still weigh 16lbs or more. I’ve detailed the changes in the tech bulletin.

Changes coming for 2009 that you want to know about now:
For 2009 the Toyo R888 and the Toyo RA1 will both be allowed in the respective maximum sizes for CMC and CMC2 cars. Toyo intends to continue making the 255/50R16, and we therefore intend on continuing to use it for CMC.

Since you’re going to ask…the driver for allowing the fatter tire in CMC2 cars centers around several things, in no particular order, which include compatibility with other series, availability of wheels, a sidewall that is less prone to wrecking wheels, and less dramatic change to required car setup.

Great...someone tell TOYO to start making a hell of a lot more 275/40/17's given we seem to run out every year with just AI running them...add CMC2 and it might get a lot worse.

Good to hear that both R888's and RA1's will be allowed. I have seen in the past with IMCA that a change was made and NO crossover was allowed.

I would assume the R888 as I thought they were discontinuing the RA1.
So now I need to get some 275's. Glad I only bought a set of 255/17's.
Hopefully the price on the 275's will go down with more people using them.
Sweet deal on the wheels. Just bought 6 3 piece HRE wheels.

In a RA1 or R888?

I looked at Toyo's spec sheets on the RA1's and R$$$ and the applications for R$$$ are nearly 3X that for the RA1's still in production. R$$$ list shows the 255/50/16 cmc tire already on there.

Also looks like our AI tires are molded at 6/32 which should preclude shaving at first. They also are the same weight as the RA1's in the same size.

Bryan, where do you keep finding all these wheels?

Jeff, Toyo intends on continuing to make R888 in 255R16. They do not intend to continue to make RA1s in any size.

AIM Tire (where I used to get my tires before I moved) lists:

R888 255R16 - $203
RA1 255R16 - $195

R888 275R17 - $207
RA1 275R17 - $207
