    Optispark help?

Okay... I got the bad engine pulled and looked over. It spun the two middle cylnder bearings and likely runined the crank and those two rods. Otherwise, there was plenty of wear on the main and rod bearings, but not bad for a stock 160k engine with 4+ years of racing.

It is rebuildable for sure, but time and money are an issue to go that route.

So, I have another junk yard motor to put in and see if it will hold together, but I need to purchase an opti for it. The one I have from another engine is in really bad shape, so I need to purchase a new one.

I called my local Chevy parts friend and get a new one at his cost of roughly $410, but would sure like something cheaper.

Do our rules allow the running of an Accel or MSD opti?

Any suggestions on where to find a cheaper OEM Delco unit?

The MSD is not legal. You dont want to run it anyways. I've heard of lots of failures.

Was recommended to a "friend" recently... but it wasn't available in an early model version.

Take the old one apart and clean it really really well. Put a new cap and rotor on it and use RTV to seal it. That is what I did to mine back in early 2007.

Does anyone know anything about this Chandler Motorsports? They did have a post on LS1tech.

I haven't taken it apart, but it spins terribly and metal shavings were falling out of it. I think it is shot. I also had one cracked spot where the plug wire plugs in.

I went with what Alan Blaine suggested ... a MSD cap and rotor on an OEM base.

The MSD rotor uses real screws to attach the bus bar to the rotor. I disassembled it and used loctite on them.
The MSD cap has an O-ring seal, but I also used a small bead of RTV to ensure a solid seal.

The base and optics is where it's a crap shoot. If you want to be sure, then go with your GM parts guy.
I bought mine from a vendor on ebay that is no longer in business.
It was still close to $300 for the Opti and another bone or two for the cap and rotor.

But it's been worry free. I hate doing things over and over ...
